It seems that LG Display, one of two suppliers to various Smart TV and monitor manufacturers alongside Samsung Display, is gearing to deliver several innovations in OLED display technology. According to FlatpanelsHD, LG Display revealed details about future plans last month at CES 2024 in Las Vegas. However, all information was disclosed during closed doors briefings, with the website only offering 'insights' earlier this week.
For reference, LG Display and Samsung Display exhibited OLED G4 and S95D panels publicly at CES 2024, respectively. While both should achieve 3,000 nits peak brightness at 3% APL, they cannot sustain this luminosity across a full panel. Instead, LG's MLA-OLED panels will drop to 250 nits when showing a completely white image, with Samsung's latest QD-OLED technology capable of hitting 300 nits under the same conditions.
LG Display also showcased next-generation MLA-OLED panels, of which Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC) was privy. Supposedly, this panel is even brighter than those that LG Display will ship this year, with a reported 3,700 peak brightness as an early prototype. Thus, although this is a 23% peak luminosity increase itself, there is every chance that retail units get even closer to 4,000 nits.
Reportedly, this next-generation MLA-OLED panel will be ready for 2025. In other words, LG Display will likely return to Las Vegas next January at CES 2025 sporting even brighter options than those it will mass produce throughout 2024. In the meantime, LG Electronics intends to begin shipping a transparent 77-inch panel as the Signature OLED T later this year.
