It seems to be a case of better late than never with Intel in regard to Tiger Lake. AMD has been ruling the mobile processor world lately thanks to Ryzen 4000, with Comet Lake struggling to keep up with the Renoir competition. However, Tiger Lake seems to be an altogether different beast, especially in terms of the Gen12 Xe iGPU component. Both Tum Apisak and _rogame have been keeping an eye on the Intel Core i7-1165G7 on Time Spy, and the results should put satisfied smiles on the faces of Intel’s engineers for now.
The Intel Core i7-1165G7, which has 4 cores and 8 threads, was pitted against three Renoir rivals: AMD Ryzen 7 4700U (8 cores, 8 threads), Ryzen 7 4800U (8 cores, 16 threads), and the Ryzen 9 4900HS (8 cores, 16 threads). Unsurprisingly, the CPU scores in Time Spy for the latter two Ryzen 4000 APUs dominated the Tiger Lake part; however, the i7-1165G7 held up very well against the Ryzen 7 4700U: 5,302 points (AMD) vs. 5,304 points (Intel). The Intel SoC utilized a 28 W TDP and was paired with fast LPDDR4x 4266 MHz RAM while the AMD APU was tested with a default TDP of 25 W.
However, yet again it was the Xe integrated graphics that stole the show for the Tiger Lake Intel Core i7-1165G7. Not only did the Xe iGPU skyrocket past the Vega 7 in the Ryzen 7 4700U by 35.6% in the Time Spy Graphics Score, it also managed to outscore the Vega 8 iGPUs in the Ryzen 7 4800U and Ryzen 9 4900HS by 18.0% and 14.5%, respectively. With results like these, Tiger Lake could well appeal to gamers on a limited budget who don’t want to purchase a laptop with a discrete GPU but still expect decent graphics performance from the SoC.
