Hyperkin Mega 95 debuts as new retro gaming handheld designed to play SEGA Genesis and SEGA Mega Drive cartridges
Hyperkin has presented the Mega 95, one of two forthcoming products that the company has showcased at the start of the year. While the Mega 95 evidently draws on the SEGA Genesis, known as the Mega Drive outside North America, The DuchesS revives Microsoft's original Xbox controller. Please see our 'The DuchesS' article for more details about Hyperkin's take on the Controller S.
As for the Mega 95, Hyperkin claims that it can play original SEGA Genesis cartridges like the MegaRetroN HD that it already sells. Unfortunately, it is unclear how the Mega 95 reads cartridges. As The Verge notes, Hyperkin has not disclosed such details for the time being, although it seems unlikely that it uses an expensive Field-programmable gate array (FPGA) like the Analogue Mega Sg. Instead, the MegaRetroN HD is said to use hardware emulation, which is not necessarily as accurate as the FPGA in the Analogue Mega Sg.
Additionally, the Mega 95 features a 5-inch panel with a switch for 4:3 and 16:9 display modes. Moreover, Hyperkin will include a dock with Genesis controller ports for gaming on an external monitor or a TV. Reportedly, the Mega 95 will achieve up to ten hours of battery life as well. However, Hyperkin has not yet shared the device's battery capacity, release date, or launch pricing.
