Huawei Y9 (2019) Indian variant and Nova 3/Nova 3i will not be receiving the EMUI 10 update
OTA updates are still pretty much a hit and miss in the Android world and the example of the Huawei Y9 (2019) best illustrates this problem. Earlier this week, users of Huawei Y9 (2019) vented their frustration on a Change.org petition as their phone was missing from Huawei's latest Android 10 global rollout list. Huawei responded quickly and confirmed that the Kirin 710-powered midranger would indeed be getting the EMUI 10 update. However, Huawei seems to have other plans for the Indian variant of the Huawei Y9 (2019), and it may not bode well with the users.
In a response to a user's query on Twitter as to whether the Indian variant of the Huawei Y9 will get the EMUI 10 update or not, Huawei India responded as follows:
We would like to inform you that the updates for the device has been stopped due to hardware specifications as the mother board cannot take more updates hence it is a risk for rolling the updates which may harm your device. We appreciate your understanding and patience."
A Huawei India support executive also confirmed the same to the user on chat. However, the company did say in a follow-up tweet that the handset will continue to receive security and performance updates.
We are not sure what prompted Huawei to not roll out EMUI 10 to Indian variants while global SKUs of the Huawei Y9 are confirmed to receive the update. The company's response seems to suggest something is different in the hardware of the Indian variant, but we are not quite sure what it is.
Another Huawei phone that is getting snubbed when it comes to getting EMUI 10 is the Nova 3/Nova 3i. Huawei India tweeted the following in response to a query on Twitter:
We understand you are eagerly waiting for future Android update. We regret to inform you that EMUI 10.0 / Android 10 will not be available for your device due to hardware limitations as it requires higher hardware specifications for optimal performance.
Further, we will continue to provide regular security updates and necessary update enhancing device to perform at optimum level. For more details kindly stay tuned to our official pages. We appreciate your cooperation, understanding and patience."
So, there you have it straight from the horse's mouth. The Huawei Y9 (2019) Indian variant and the Nova 3/Nova 3i will not be getting any EMUI 10 goodness. Of course, it is not the end of the world and the phones are solid offerings in their own right, but not offering a major Android update only to a particular demographic can cause quite some discontentment.
We are not sure whether Huawei would reconsider their decision, especially considering the fact that similar devices such as the Honor 8X are already getting updated to EMUI 10, but we'll be sure to keep you posted.
