The Hongo 16.1 is one of the best bang-for-the-buck external monitors we've tested. Its colors, response times, refresh rate, and QHD+ resolution are comparable to the displays on many midrange gaming laptops.

Amazon is currently holding a sale on the Hongo 16.1-inch portable monitor for $160 USD or $40 off the original launch price. The monitor is notable for its relatively high-end specifications including a 16:10 aspect ratio, slightly larger screen size than the typical 15.6-inch alternative, full sRGB colors, and 120 Hz refresh rate. The manufacturer has sent us a sample for our honest impressions.

When compared to other inexpensive external monitors like those from Lepow, the Hongo is an immediate upgrade with noticeable differences in quality. Everything from resolution, response times, colors, and refresh rates are all denser, faster, deeper, and higher, respectively, for a significant boost in the visual experience. Hongo advertises the monitor to be fit for gaming purposes and we can certainly confirm the claim.

* ... smaller is better

We also appreciate that both of the USB-C ports support DisplayPort and Power Delivery. Other portable monitors may sport two USB-C ports as well, but DisplayPort would only be compatible with just one of the two ports.

Holes on the back of the monitor support VESA mounting (75 x 75) which is also relatively uncommon on many inexpensive portable monitors. The monitor itself is very lightweight at just 685 g or 1126 g with the removable protective cover.

Keep in mind that the display does not come pre-calibrated and so grayscale and colors out of the box aren't very accurate. Once properly calibrated with our X-Rite colorimeter, however, we're able to reduce the average grayscale and color deltaE values to just 1.0 and 0.65, respectively. We recommend applying our calibrated ICM profile above to better exploit the full sRGB colors of the display.

There are a few annoyances to be aware of. Firstly, the five physical buttons for OSD control seem like overkill especially since none of them are labeled from the front. It's easy to press the wrong button by accident as a result. We also ran into an issue outputting the full 2560 x 1600 resolution at 120 Hz through HDMI while USB-C would exhibit no problems. Thus, we recommend utilizing USB-C whenever possible especially since it can carry both power and data to reduce cable clutter.

The built-in stereo speakers face sideways instead of the front towards the user. We hope to see them repositioned to the front of the screen in the future to improve volume.

The inclusion of Micro-USB is strange since it has been almost universally replaced by USB-C these days. It would have been more useful to include USB-A or even mini-DisplayPort instead.

The short list of setbacks don't detract from the longer list of impressive features especially considering the sale price of $160 USD. It may not be OLED, but the Hongo is nonetheless a versatile external monitor for gaming, amateur graphics editing, emailing, and everything in between.
