Hideo Kojima says Xbox-backed Physint could be his best-selling game ever

According to the legendary video game creator behind the Metal Gear series, who was ousted by Konami and recently let go by Sony while working on Kojima Productions’ final stealth-action espionage game, Physint will be his biggest-selling game yet.

In an interview with The Washington Post, Hideo Kojima says that Physint will be the biggest-selling title he could possibly create when it comes out, possibly after 2030. This is his most direct comment since Sony’s exit from the project, which is still owned by Kojima Productions.

Shock and surprise stemming from a Zoom call

During the interview, Hideo Kojima told the full story of what happened between Kojima Productions and Sony, which unfolded during a Zoom call in mid-June. After the call ended and Sony withdrew from Physint, Kojima Productions President Shinji Hirano was flabbergasted by Hideo Kojima’s response.

The call ended, and he returned to work. As for Hirano, he stated, “I just totally went blank when they told me. The biggest surprise was Hideo’s actions after that. He went back to his room and started working.”

However, when Kojima was asked about his feelings regarding Sony’s decision to stop funding Physint, he opened up and said, “I was just shocked and surprised. I wasn’t angry or sad. I was just thinking, ‘What should I do?’ It’s a big problem for us, and I couldn’t tell staff at the time.”

What’s more distressing is the fact that Sony didn’t give Kojima a proper reason for the cancellation, nor did the company respond to a request for comment.

Fast-forward to September, and Kojima Productions has been welcomed by Xbox CEO Asha Sharma, who will fund Kojima’s final stealth-action espionage title.

The biggest Kojima title yet?

Kojima is confident Physint will become his best-selling title to date, despite fearing the game would be canceled. He told The Washington Post:

“This is the biggest-selling title I could possibly create. I didn’t think Physint would be at risk of being canceled.”

Currently, Physint’s plot is complete, along with the game design and storyboards. Kojima Productions is creating 3D models of its celebrity and actor cast, including the recently revealed Bill Skarsgård, Don Lee, Charlee Fraser, and Minami Hamabe.
