New Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire footage sparks Switch port rumours

Speculation about Nintendo remastering Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire has resurfaced after footage attributed to the games appeared on the official Japanese Pokémon X account. Fans quickly took note of the clip's unusually sharp, high-definition visuals, arguing they looked nothing like the original 2004 Game Boy Advance releases, which ran on a far lower resolution of 240×160. Several commenters concluded the footage must be from an unannounced Switch version rather than archival GBA material.

This follows Nintendo's February 2026 release of Switch ports for Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, themselves remakes of the 1996 Game Boy originals, establishing a pattern of the company revisiting older generations for modern hardware. Earlier reports have also suggested that Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald may arrive on Switch, with an August rumour suggesting a September or October release window.

That said, none of this amounts to confirmation. The footage's origin has not been verified, and it is equally plausible the clip was simply a nostalgia-driven marketing post with no connection to new hardware. The timing is also interesting: the original Japanese release of Ruby and Sapphire falls in November, a date Nintendo has shown willingness to use for retro re-releases before, but this remains inference, not established fact.
