Deal | Steam: Zelda-inspired retro RPG drops below $1.50 for the first time

In Kingsgrave, players take on the role of a king who has actually been dead for quite some time but is brought back to life by the hope of his people. His once-thriving kingdom has been devastated by a plague that wiped out large parts of the population and spawned grotesque creatures. Fresh from the grave, he sets out to slay all kinds of monsters, rescue his subjects and rebuild the kingdom piece by piece.

In terms of gameplay, Kingsgrave is reminiscent of classic Zelda adventures: Players explore the world from a top-down perspective, solve environmental puzzles and fight monsters in real-time combat. Life essence obtained from defeated enemies and materials collected throughout the game world are needed to rebuild destroyed structures, which in turn unlock new weapons, better healing options and other upgrades.

Equipment often serves multiple purposes. A crossbow, for example, can be used to attack enemies but also to activate distant switches and open up new areas. There are no complex builds. Instead, the arsenal gradually expands over the course of the game, while movement, positioning and the use of environmental traps play a larger role in combat.

In its review, GameGrin particularly praised Kingsgrave for its entertaining puzzles, versatile equipment and rewarding exploration. The rebuilding system and dark retro atmosphere were also well received. On the other hand, the publication criticized the very simplistic combat system and the somewhat monotonous game world. Overall, GameGrin awarded the game 7 out of 10 points. The Steam community's verdict is slightly more positive, with 79% positive ratings from more than 600 player reviews.

85% off on Steam for the first time

Kingsgrave normally costs $9.99 on Steam but is 85% off until September 27, bringing the price down to $1.49. According to SteamDB, this marks a new all-time low – the previous maximum discount was 80%. On the Steam Deck, the RPG is Steam Deck Verified and should therefore run without major issues.
