The HP OMEN 16 (16-xd0000) offers good enough gaming capabilities, with the Ryzen 7 7840HS and RTX 4060 reaching around 4.00 GHz and 2365 MHz, respectively, under maximum load. However, we’ve seen better-performing devices in terms of clocks with the same chips like the Acer Nitro 16 (AN16-41). The OMEN 16 fans are also noisy when the internals are pushed to their limits. On the bright side, both external and internal thermals are in check. The default PWM-free 144Hz 1080p display (CMN162E) offers wide viewing angles and a 1580:1 contrast ratio. On the other hand, the maximum brightness and the color coverage are low. The build quality is above the average. The matte finish on the chassis picks up fingerprints with ease.

If you have HP Omen 16-money burning a hole in your pocket, you can choose from a host of competing machines. Acer’s Nitro 5 is a stalwart of the sector and can be picked up with a 140W RTX 4060 for a little less, but the 144Hz display is rather low rent, and the battery life is poor. Lenovo’s LOQ 15i is another option which can be picked up with an RTX 4060 GPU for £1,250, though it’s often on sale for under £1,000 but again, the 144Hz display is drab and battery life poor. This brings us to the Omen 16’s main selling point: No part of it is actually bad. That may seem like faint praise, but in the lower-mid-price gaming laptop market, it’s really not. Yes, a 16:10 panel would be preferable, and a second SSD mount would be useful, but the display, sound system, battery life, performance, design and build quality are all among the very best you can get for the price. If you fancy something with different capabilities in any of these areas, we’ve got a bunch more options featured in our best gaming laptop guide.

The HP OMEN 16 AMD is packing top-tier specifications at a reasonable price. The AMD + NVIDIA combination also gives it a decent battery backup over other competitors. So if you consider the price, specifications, and the way it is put together, then you have a really good laptop at hand. The Intel model starts at Rs 1,00,699 and gives you 16GB RAM, RTX4050 graphics, and 512GB SSD storage. Now the AMD version starts at Rs 1,09,990 and is packing the same RAM and graphics, but with a 1TB SSD. So, for around Rs 10,000 more, you get twice the storage, which should help in the long run if you wish to store more content on the laptop. However, if you’re already using Thunderbolt peripherals or plan on using them, you may have to consider an Intel laptop. Intel models also perform slightly better at benchmarks, but you’re unlikely to feel a difference even during heavy gaming.

Shopping for laptops can be difficult. You have to ask yourself so many questions just so you have an idea of what you're looking for. Do you want the best laptop out there or do you want something more run-of-the-mill for work? Or maybe you prefer a gaming rig? If you find yourself agonizing over the right laptop, allow me to introduce the HP Omen 16. It's a slim, lightweight laptop able to fit snuggly in almost any bag. You can lug it around and hardly know it's there. I used it as my main computer for everyday work for a few weeks. Typing on the keyboard was quite pleasant since the keys have a nice, springy feel to them and the deep travel distance made it easy on my hands. The touchpad itself sports a smooth, responsive, enjoyably clicky feel. And its large size makes it great for productivity. My review unit had an AMD Ryzen 7-7840HS processor paired up with a NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 graphics card.

Not only does the HP Omen 16 improve upon its previous design flaws but it does so with a clear focus on maintaining the laptop’s famous cooling performance. The use of the AMD Ryzen 7840HS processor further expands the usability of HP Omen 16 in terms of efficiency. And on top of that HP’s engineering and design capabilities keep it competitive to other identically specced gaming laptops and even surpassing them in terms of thermal efficiency. The easy-to-use HP Omen firmware, a highly colour-accurate display, and a great keyboard trump the fact that its quad-speaker setup and trackpad are what my Gen Z neighbour would call “mid” by modern standards.

This range for display formats was and is a rarity. It is larger than the general standard of 15 inches, but not yet in the range of large workstations. One usually has higher screen resolutions available, but portability suffers from that.

75.67%: This rating is not earth-shattering. This rating must actually be seen as average, since there are about as many devices with worse ratings as better ones. A purchase recommendation can only be seen with a lot of goodwill, unless it is about websites that generally rate strictly.
