Garmin has now launched the Instinct 2X following several leaks. As expected, Garmin has positioned the Instinct 2X series as a larger version of the Instinct 2, which the company continues to sell. Specifically, the Instinct 2X series features 50 mm case sizes, up from 45 mm for the Instinct 2 and 40 mm for the Instinct 2S. The Instinct 2X series also relies on comparatively wide wristbands at 26 mm.
Accordingly, Garmin's latest smartwatches are rather thick and heavy too, with 14.5 mm thick cases that weigh 67 g. For reference, the Instinct 2X series is 10 ATM water-resistant and has a fibre-reinforced polymer housing. Moreover, Garmin has equipped the Instinct 2X series with a 1.1-inch MiP display that resolves at 176 x 176 pixels and outputs in greyscale.
The energy-efficient display and integrated solar cells combine to deliver theoretically infinite battery life though, provided that the Instinct 2X series receives at least three hours of daylight per day. If that is not the case, the built-in battery should last up to 40 days in smartwatch mode but as little as 27 hours with all satellite systems and multi-band GPS activated.
Furthermore, Garmin has equipped the Instinct 2X series with a flashlight that can output in red or white at four brightness levels. As always, Garmin has included access to its Connect IQ Store, its Pay service and the usual suite of exercise and wellbeing apps. Also, the Tactical Edition adds a Night Vision mode that makes the display readable while wearing night vision goggles, as well as a stealth mode for taking the smartwatch off-grid. Garmin has integrated a Jumpmaster mode too, along with a kill switch and an optional ballistic calculator.
The Garmin Instinct 2X series starts at US$449.99 for the Instinct 2X Solar. At launch, Garmin offers the Solar model in Flame Red, Graphite, Moss and Whitestone colourways. In comparison, the Instinct 2X Tactical Edition comes in just Black and Coyote Tan options. The Tactical Edition also retails for US$499.99, a US$50 surcharge over its Solar counterpart.
