AMD has claimed that owners of an RX 5700 XT graphics card can obtain up to an 8% “performance improvement” in the forthcoming Gears 5 (Gears of War 5) third-person shooter as long as the new optional driver is downloaded and installed. DirectX 12 tests were carried out with the game at AMD’s Performance Labs with ultra presets and 4K resolution, with the results based on a comparison between the 19.8.2 and 19.9.1 drivers.
The Gears of War franchise is a billion-dollar business, and it pays for AMD to make sure gamers are aware that cards such as the RX 5700 XT can offer increased gameplay performance over competing products in certain titles. For a huge fan of the series, knowing that 8% more performance can be squeezed out of a particular card can be the deciding factor into making a hardware purchase.
However, the 19.9.1 driver from AMD does come with some known issues, including one related to the new Gears of War title: “Gears 5 may experience an application hang on loading screen with APU only (Ryzen) based desktop system configurations.” You can download the latest driver, which is compatible with many Radeon products including the Radeon VII and RX Vega Series, from AMD here. Gears 5 is currently scheduled for release on September 10.
