The Game Kiddy Pixel (GKD Pixel) has been around for a while now, having debuted over eighteen months ago. Equipped with a 2.4-inch and 4:3 display, the GKD Pixel received rave reviews when it finally arrived last March. Since then, plenty of competitors have released competing compact gaming handhelds, whether that be Miyoo and MagicX with the A30 and XU Mini M, respectively, or the Anbernic RG28XX (curr. $54.99 on Amazon).
While each of those devices is readily available, the GKD Pixel remains hard to come by. Nonetheless, RetroCN has confirmed that a second-generation model is almost upon us, which will launch as the GKD Pixel 2. Specifications remain unknown at this point, although Retro Dodo has managed to tease out from both RetroCN and GKD the following changes from the original Pixel:
- An improved display
- A faster SoC with enough power to emulate PlayStation Portable games
- A working sleep mode
Reportedly, the Pixel 2 should cost between $70 and $80, which is in line with its predecessor's initial pricing. The device is slated to be available in black, green, purple and red finishes, plus a Gold and Cyberpunk-themed option that will be strictly a limited edition option. According to Retro Dodo, RetroCN has received word that pre-orders in China will open next week. No release timeline has been offered globally at the time of publication, though.
