GALAX has seemingly not read the room properly and has advertised its remaining stock of GeForce RTX 3080 (10 GB) cards for the “bargain” price of US$699.99. The Ampere board was originally released by Nvidia back in September 2020 and listed with a launch MSRP of US$699. Therefore, GALAX’s clearance sale simply features the modified GeForce RTX 3080 back to its launch price. But according to one price-monitoring site, this somewhat cheeky asking amount is still actually something of a good deal, at least for those who must have an RTX 3080 card.
A price history chart for the GeForce RTX 3080 shows that by June 2021 the average price for a new version of this graphics card was a whopping US$2,399. Apparently, the average price for a new 10 GB RTX 3080 board now is US$800, so the GALAX offer of US$699.99 is a bargain when put into this context. However, it seems likely that many gamers and desktop PC builders would rather stump up an extra US$150 or so and snag a brand-new GeForce RTX 4070 Ti board instead. For instance, Newegg currently lists a number of RTX 4070 Ti cards starting at US$839.99-US$849.99, produced by well-known AiB partners such as PNY, Gigabyte, ZOTAC, and Asus.
Unsurprisingly, the Twitter post from GALAX North America has been ridiculed a bit, as it would seem irrational for anyone to pay nearly US$700 for a graphics card from 2020 when a shopper can buy a much better 2023 unit for a reasonable amount more. It can be seen in our RTX 3080 vs. RTX 4070 Ti comparison that the newer card is generally superior in both synthetic benchmarks and gaming tests, while it also requires less power (285 W vs. 320 W) thanks to the improved Lovelace architecture and presence of an Ada GPU (AD104-400).
