Six months after the release of the first RTX 40 Lovelace GPU, the RTX 4090, Nvidia is reportedly launching the cheaper RTX 4070 on April 13. But, based on the recent leak that the company is enforcing two different review embargo dates that are tied to the MSRP, we may be in for an unpleasant surprise when it comes to the pricing of the GPU. Moore’s Law Is Dead suggests we are indeed looking at an eye-watering price tag for the RTX 4070.
According to sources that MLID calls “some of his best”, the RTX 4070 has a planned MSRP of US$749.99 with some AIB models costing even more. The leaker claims that, although the price seems quite high, he has seen proof that substantiates these reports. Additionally, an AIB source mentioned that they “have plans for models at least up to US$799”.
As a reference, the last-gen RTX 3070 had an MSRP of US$499 while the RTX 3080 10 GB and 12 GB had suggested prices of US$699 and US$799 respectively. In other words, if MLID’s report about an absurd US$749.99 RTX 4070 pricing is accurate, it will be an insane 50% gen-on-gen price increase.
That said, Nvidia is no stranger to price corrections as the company dropped the MSRP of the now-doomed RTX 4080 12 GB from US$899 to US$799 and launched the card as the RTX 4070 Ti. So, we may end up seeing the desktop RTX 4070 launch at a lower than the rumored US$749.99 rate.
