AMD's Frank Azor heavily (albeit tacitly) implied Framework would integrate Strix Halo into its offerings. And the best part is, it has, that too in a company-first form factor: a desktop. The Framework Desktop more of a mini-PC, but you get a PCIe Gen4 slot with a bunch of I/O, such as 2x USB 4.0 ports, 2x DP ports,1x HDMI port, and 5 Gb/s Ethernet. And, in true Frameworks fashion, you can mix and match your front ports.
The top-spec model comes with an AMD Ryzen AI Max 395+ Strix Halo processor with 16 Zen 5 cores, 40 RDNA 3.5 CUs and 128 GB of LPDDR5x on package memory. A lower-spec variant is also available with a. 8-core Ryzen AI Max 385. Unfortunately, RAM isn't expandable, but you can add up to 16 GB of storage via two NVMe slots. And, the Framework Desktop comes with a Wi-Fi 7 module built-in. A 400 Watt Flexi-ATX PSU powers the Framework Desktop.
While Strix Halo isn't particularly as power-hungry as desktop chips, it can still guzzle up to 86 Watts under full load. It won't have much trouble that wattage because Framework has thrown in a 120 mm cooler and a Noctua fan to keep the mini-PC chilly. If you have something that works better, you are free to use it. The Framework Desktop also comes with modular 21 tile-like blocks that let you change the look and feel. Not just that, but it also lets you add a carrying handle for easier transport.Essentially, all you really need is a power supply and the motherboard from Framework. You can DIY everything else- a standard theme with the company's offerings.
The top-spec Framework Desktop model with the 16-core Strix Halo CPU and 128 GB of RAM will set you back by $1,999. This is remarkably lower than what Asus charges, but one might argue the markup is justified because Asus is selling a fully functional laptop and not just a mini-PC. The above-mentioned entry-level version with the 8-core CPU and 32 GB RAM will set you back by $1,099, which is, once again, a very decent asking price. Pre-orders start now, but shipments begin only in Q3, 2025, so you have some time to set aside some cash.
