The Framework 16 laptop has been refreshed with new CPUs from AMD's Ryzen AI 300 series. They can now be paired with an Nvidia GeForce RTX 5070 on top of the existing Radeon RX 7700S option.

A few days ago, Framework posted a cryptic teaser about 'something big that got bigger'. One could rightfully assume it had something to do with a larger laptop, but it turns out that isn't the case. Instead, 2023's Framework 16 receives a fresh coat of paint, incorporating some features rarely found on laptops.

For starters, the new Framework 16 gets new AMD Ryzen AI 300 Strix Point and Krackan Point CPUs, with the Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 as the top-tier offering, followed by the Ryzen AI 7 350 as the other alternative. One can now pair it with an Nvidia GeForce RTX 5070 laptop GPU or stick with the Radeon RX 7700S found on the 2023 model. Alternatively, those who don't need a dGPU can opt for additional storage via two extra expansion slots.

The new Framework 16 also ships with a 240 Watt USB-PD charger, the maximum supported by the standard. It isn't compact by any means, but required for the specced-out version. You can also connect your laptop to a monitor via USB-C and use it as a power source while also outputting video. It won't be nearly as effective as a dedicated charger, but it is still a nice alternative to have.

In true Framework fashion, the GPUs are interchangeable and can be swapped at will. Of course, each module has to be bought separately, and they cost a pretty penny. The RTX 5070 costs $700, and the Radeon RX 7700S costs $400. A build with a Ryzen AI 9 HX 370, RTX 5070, 32 GB RAM and 1 TB storage, a 240 Watt charger and barebones I/O will set you back by an eye-watering $2,806, which could otherwise net you two laptops with similar specs.

Other notable upgrades include Wi-Fi 7, a 1080p camera and an 85 Wh battery. The new Framework 16 is up for pre-order on the company's official website. Thankfully, you don't have to pay the entire amount upfront. For the configuration listed above, the deposit is just $100.
