DisplayMate awards the "Best Smartphone Display" title to the iPhone 14 Pro Max
The "Best Smartphone Display" award from DisplayMate remains with Apple, as the crown previously possessed by the iPhone 13 Pro Max has been passed on to its successor, namely the iPhone 14 Pro Max. Although a few tests did not deliver perfect results, the overall A+ rating stands for a nearly perfect visual experience.
The list that shows all the tests performed on the iPhone 14 Pro Max and their results is very long, but the highlights include a peak brightness level of more than 2,300 nits (Apple advertises only 2,000 nits!), the lowest screen reflectance recorded by DisplayMate so far (only 4.5 percent), as well as highest contrast rating in ambient light (228 for 100% APL and 513 for peak brightness).
In addition to the above, there are quite a few test items with a result that says "visually indistinguishable from perfect" and their list includes highest color accuracy on white, smallest shift in color accuracy, highest absolute color accuracy, highest image contrast accuracy and intensity scale accuracy, smallest shift in image contrast and intensity scale, as well as the smallest change in peak luminance. The highest contrast ratio test came up with a result that should say it all: infinite.
Quite interesting, but not entirely surprising, is the fact that the displays used by Apple in the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max come from Samsung. The upcoming Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra might be able to grab the crown from the iPhone 14 Pro Max in this category, but this is something that remains to be seen.
