Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max fails to beat predecessor in battery life tests
Shortly after the iPhone 14 Pro Max's release, DisplayMate awarded it the 'Best Smartphone Display, a commendation that it relinquished from its predecessor. Subsequently, DxOMark has put the iPhone 14 Pro Max through its battery life tests, underlining our analysis for the most part. For context, we found that the iPhone 14 Pro Max lasted longer at idle and when streaming an H.264 encoded video than the iPhone 13 Pro Max.
Conversely, the iPhone 14 Pro Max lasted a few minutes less than its predecessor under load and in our Wi-Fi tests. In DxOMark's view, the iPhone 14 Pro Max has the 15th best battery and charging performance of any smartphone it has reviewed so far, and the second best of an ultra-premium smartphone. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the iPhone 14 Pro Max only loses out to the iPhone 13 Pro Max in this test.
Still, the website was not a fan of the former's power consumption when using the camera app, which is on the high side. Similarly, the iPhone 14 Pro Max offers relatively slow charging speed whether using a wired or a wireless connection. Overall, the iPhone 14 Pro Max has excellent battery life in general use and when streaming videos. Unfortunately for Apple, the adoption of a new chipset and a revised display appears to have not moved the needle in the direction of superior battery life, despite promises of improved efficiencies from both components.
