The launch of the second-generation Asus ROG gaming phone draws closer and details of the device have now been revealed. Notable takeaways include a humongous 5800 mAh battery, 120 Hz AMOLED display, and the new Snapdragon 855+.

Asus announced its first gaming smartphone, the ROG Phone, back in June last year. The company is expected to debut the successor to that phone, the ROG Phone 2, in the coming weeks, and details of the device have now been revealed.

The ROG Phone 2 will feature a 6.59-inch FHD+ AMOLED display. That's the same resolution and display type as its predecessor but the display itself will see a bump in size from the 6.0-inch one on the first-gen phone. The biggest upgrade is in the refresh rate, though. The ROG Phone 1 had a 90 Hz refresh rate but the ROG Phone 2 will take that up a notch to 120 Hz.

We've seen 120 Hz displays before—the Razer Phone 2 and iPad Pro being the biggest examples—but they use LCD panels. The ROG Phone 2 will be the first smartphone to feature a 120 Hz AMOLED display.

The ROG Phone 2 will be powered by Qualcomm's new Snapdragon 855+. That would likely make it the most powerful Android phone on the planet at launch, unless it's beaten to the punch by Nubia and Xiaomi's upcoming Red Magic and Black Shark gaming phones respectively.

Under the hood, the ROG Phone 2 will feature a 5800 mAh battery, which is a big jump from the 4000 mAh unit on the ROG Phone 1. That should, hopefully, compensate for the bigger display, higher refresh rate, and higher-clocked SoC.
