Desperate times, desperate measures: New HP ProBook G2 laptops to feature soldered 128 GB UFS storage for lower price

Affordable PCs get a new importance in the times of RAM shortages and exploding prices. HP is launching a full-lineup of new affordable laptop PCs under the HP ProBook 4 brand, made for the small and medium business market. The new HP ProBook 4 G2 that replaces the HP ProBook 4 G1 (available on Amazon) generation consists a total of three different sizes, with 13.3-inch, 14-inch and 16-inch options, as well as a 13.3-inch convertible model, with HP also offering pretty much every x86 CPU available on the market right now, from both AMD and Intel.
Naturally, this means the complexity is quite high. On the Intel side, users will get a choice of Intel Core 200 CPUs (Raptor Lake Refresh), Intel Core 200V (Lunar Lake) and Intel Core 300 (Panther Lake). As for AMD, there are both the Ryzen 200 CPUs as well as Ryzen AI 400 (Gorgon Point). All these different CPUs will be available for the 14-inch and 16-inch sizes, except Lunar Lake, which is exclusive to the HP ProBook 4 G2iR with a 14-inch screen. Also, the 13.3-inch models, convertible or clamshell, will only feature the Intel Core 200 CPUs and not be available with AMD at all.
HP goes above and beyond to lower costs on storage
To weather the RAM crisis, HP gives its buusiness customers a maximum of flexibility. The new HP ProBook 4 G2 models can be configured with as little as 8 GB of RAM, but also with a maximum of 64 GB. All models feature upgradeable RAM with SO-DIMM slots, except for the Lunar Lake variant. Further, HP tries to lower the costs on storage, too: Most models will feature 256 GB to 1 TB SSDs, but for the Raptor Lake Refresh models of the ProBook, there also is a soldered 128 GB UFS option.
To lower costs even more, HP cuts down on more luxury features: The HP ProBook 4 G2 axes Thunderbolt ports, instead offering just regular USB-C ports, although with up to 20 GB signaling on select models.
High-end screen IPS WQXGA panels optional on HP ProBook 4 G2
While customers can choose to save on storage and RAM, they can spend money on higher quality screens if they want. The base variants of the HP ProBook 4 series still feature cheaper WUXGA (1,920 x 1,200) panels with limited color gamut coverage, but the 14-inch and 16-inch versions will also be available with high quality 2.5K / WQXGA (2,560 x 1,600) LCD screens, with 120 Hz refresh rate, 400 cd/m² brightness and 100 percent AdobeRGB/DCI-P3 coverage.
As for the rest of the specs, the HP ProBook line ranges in weight between 1.27 kg (13.3-inch) and 1.69 kg, with all variants configured with a 56 Wh battery. There is optional 5G on all models, and the 16-inch variants naturally include a numpad, while the convertible HP ProBook 4 Flip G2i has a digitzer pen that can be stored inside the chassis.
