Some could accuse Dell of resting on its laurels, but the Dell XPS 15 (2022) remains one of the best premium laptops around, particularly if you can afford to splash out on a model with the gorgeous OLED screen. While the power-constrained GPU means it’s not as good for gaming as the specs suggest, it’s more than fast enough for anything and everything beyond that. Most of all, it’s great to use. If you’re in the market for a high-end Windows portable, put the Dell XPS 15 high on your shortlist.

Finally, since the two laptops share the same Core i7-12700H, their CPU-bound performance is pretty much the same. However, the RTX 3060 in the XPS 17 translates to a significant increase graphics performance over the XPS 15. If you’re looking for a laptop that can pull double duty as a work machine and an occasional gaming system, the XPS 17 will better perform that role than the XPS 15, so long as you don’t mind lugging around a heavier laptop. Potential buyers should also take note that the XPS 17 costs significantly more than the XPS 15. The XPS 17 starts at $1849, but our review unit is priced at $3049. Those considering picking the XPS 17 over the XPS 15 for the RTX 3060, might want to think twice about whether the bump in graphics performance is worth the additional cost. Nonetheless, so long as you have the cash, we don’t think you can go wrong with either system and both are fairly priced in comparison to similar premium (operative word) options in the market currently.

Even if it isn’t shaking up the computing world with never-before-seen features, it's an all-around solid machine that's perfect for everyday work and high-end gaming. But if you’re not convinced the XPS 15 is for you or don’t want a Windows laptop, consider the MacBook Pro 16-inch, which costs roughly $50 more than what our XPS 15 review unit sells for. While Apple's premium laptop isn’t great for gaming (unless you're playing games from Apple's macOS/iOS App Stores), it’s exceptional for everyday work and serious photo/audio/video editing. If you're looking for a gaming laptop comparable to the XPS 15 OLED, the Alienware m15 R4 and Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 (2022) are solid choices. And if you want a more affordable alternative, the Alienware x14 is a good pick, even if it lacks an OLED screen. Still, there’s something to be said for a dependable laptop that does exactly what it needs to. While the Dell XPS 15 OLED is more of the same, that same is pretty darn awesome. If you need a great Windows ultraportable, this is it.

The Dell XPS 15 (2022) has a lot of plus points. The 3.5K OLED touch screen on my review configuration and the speakers -- standard on every configuration -- are excellent, and the build quality is exemplary. There are plenty of configurations, and, if budget allows, the ability to specify 4TB of storage (2TB in the UK) is impressive. And yet, for such a high-end laptop, the 720p webcam is disappointing, and Dell could have helped users with legacy gear by including on-board HDMI and USB-A ports. However, if these issues are of no concern, then maybe the Dell XPS 15 (2022) is indeed the Goldilocks of the XPS world.

One of the best laptops ever made just got even better, with new Intel Alder Lake processors and RTX GPUs packed into the classic XPS laptop design. Little has changed on the Dell XPS 15 series in the last few years, but the 12th-gen Intel Alder Lake hardware implemented in this XPS 15 9520 generation impacts its overall capabilities and efficiency in a significant way. You should still not get this for its sheer performance, but as long as you understand and accept its design limitations and its various quirks, this mid-2022 XPS 15 could be the right multi-purpose premium Windows laptop for you this year.

The Dell XPS 15 9520 delivers the goods for content creators with its rugged and beautiful enclosure, stunning OLED display, and competitive performance with the latest Intel silicon and GeForce RTX graphics. It may be a tad too heavy for regular commuting, but office workers looking for a productivity machine with a high design and roomy display will also find lots to like about the XPS 15 9520. Given that it’s probably not making daily commutes, however, I wish Dell bumped the display up to a 16-inch 16:10 panel. The RTX 3050 Ti graphics aid its multimedia capabilities but are of limited use for 3D gaming. If you are devising a way to package a work laptop and gaming laptop into one, you’ll need to look elsewhere. You’ll likely be able to find another laptop with a higher-end RTX GPU for less than the cost of our RTX 3050 Ti-based test model, but you’ll need to sacrifice the OLED panel and settle for a lower screen resolution than the 3.5K resolution that our XPS 15 9520 provides.

I think the biggest reason not to get the Dell XPS 15 is if you want a productivity machine. That’s what U-series processors and integrated graphics are for, and something like a Dell XPS 13 would actually serve you much better than an XPS 15 would. Of course, there’s also the issue of the webcam, which is something to be aware of.

At this point, the XPS 15 is the closest Dell has come to delivering a near-perfect workhorse machine. It's beautiful exterior hides tremendous power for serious tasks, but it can also handle games when you need some downtime. And on top of that, it packs pretty much every feature we'd want in a modern laptop, especially if you opt for that gorgeous OLED display. Just like Apple, Dell proves that a good design can last for years.
