Truly professional? The Dell Venue 11 Pro is a Windows tablet aimed at the business user. We take a look at the version with Core i3 processor to determine if it is indeed a suitable companion for the office.

Microsoft’s Surface Pro 2 looks and feels better than the Venue Pro, but Dell’s tablet supports superb keyboards and a second battery, has great connectivity, and is backed by excellent service and support. There are better value equivalents from other manufacturers, but the Venue Pro reigns in terms of flexibility when it comes to specifications, prices and accessories.

The top of the line Dell Venue 11 Pro (7139) excels as a workhorse Windows 8 slate tablet with its detachable keyboard base. It's got a lot more performance potential than the similarly priced, Atom-equipped Dell Latitude 10 Enhanced Security, our previous high-end champ. Plus, the Venue 11 Pro has a detachable keyboard option, while the Latitude 10 is a simple slate. Therefore, it's no surprise that the Venue 11 Pro (7139) is our new Editors' Choice for high-end business tablets, replacing the Latitude 10.

95% Dell Venue 11 Pro with Travel Dock: Outstanding laptop
Source: Zdnet.com English Archive.org version
I really like the Venue 11 Pro as a tablet, and especially as a laptop with the Travel Dock. Out of the 20-plus Windows laptops and hybrids I have tested, the Dell Venue 11 Pro is the best, by far. It’s just the right size as a tablet, and indistinguishable from a “real” laptop with the Travel Dock. Dell has nailed it perfectly.

The $1,080 Dell Venue 11 Pro impresses with its attractive design and sheer versatility, and businesses will appreciate the addition of the fingerprint and Smart Card readers. We also like the vivid, 10.8-inch display. However, this tablet simply doesn't offer the performance we would expect at the price.

The Dell Venue 11 Pro has a nice body with excellent manufacturing, an outstanding screen and long battery life. Unfortunately, all this is countered by an extremely lightweight processor and GPU, giving it performance that falls several notches below Microsoft's Surface Pro 2, a rival that provides a true laptop + tablet experience for the same price.

Review: Dell Venue 11 Pro Windows tablet
Source: Gizmag English Archive.org version
Dell has put together an outstanding piece of kit here. The recommended UK retail price of £790 (US$1,049.99 in the US) for the i5-powered version, which is more expensive than both the Surface Pro 2 and comparable iPads. If you're looking for a device with which you can breeze through work without compromising on multimedia playback support then this has to be right up there. The prospect of Dell following up the Venue 11 Pro with any significant upgrades is mouthwatering.

The Venue 11 Pro is a good tablet thanks to its screen quality, versatile design and reasonable processor, and its lower prices make it a tempting alternative to the Surface Pro, even though Microsoft’s machine has a faster processor and more stylish design. If you’re willing to drop the specification, the Venue becomes better value.

80% Dell Venue 11 Pro review A Full HD Windows 8.1 tablet that's a blend for business brilliance
Source: Techradar English Archive.org version
The Dell only falls down in a couple of areas. Its 2MP front camera is only suitable for Skype calls, and the 8mp rear shooter produces shots that are a little too dark for our liking. And, when it comes to audio, there's little to shout about: the Venue's stereo speakers have good volume but tinny high-hats and a muddy mid-range. The second battery pack available in the Venue's optional keyboard adds welcome longevity, and the Venue 11 Pro still works out at good value when compared to the Surface and its equivalent accessory. It's a versatile tablet that'll be at home in the office, but we'd still consider a similarly-sized Ultrabook if a keyboard was crucial.

There’s no doubt that the Dell is a capable rival for the Surface Pro 2 at the high-end of the Windows 8 tablet market thanks to its sturdy build quality and versatile design, and its Core i5 processor and 1080p screen are easily good enough to get most jobs done – even if they’re bettered by Microsoft’s hardware. If you just need a tablet, there’s no doubt Dell offers better deals: the £699 Core i5 model and £629 Core i3 version both come with 128GB of storage space and are both cheaper than the most affordable Surface Pro 2, which costs £719 but only has a 64GB SSD.

Dell’s Venue 11 Pro ups the ante in the hybrid arena, thanks to is versatile accessories. The hardware isn’t strong enough for hardcore games or producing the next great animated short, but its three combinations were more than adequate for my entertainment and routine computing needs.

The Venue 11 Pro is a great concept, and we can truly imagine it finding a happy home in many a mobile worker's bag. Its replaceable battery is its ultimate selling point, and it performed very well in all the office tasks we threw at it. But questionable screen quality, odd keyboard dock design and the occasional software glitch tarnishes the experience somewhat and makes us question whether the device has the build quality to survive life in the real world.

The Dell Venue 11 Pro is a little bit tablet and a little bit ultraportable, but it's all business. For $499 you get a tablet with full Windows 8.1 (not the Surface 2's limited Windows RT) and 8 hours of battery life, in an elegant, yet eye-catching frame. We also appreciate the multiple docking options.

By focusing on the business market with the Venue 11 Pro Dell has sensibly avoided any comparisons with Android, iOS and even Windows RT tablets. Instead, the Venue 11 Pro’s main rival is Microsoft’s own Surface Pro 2, although the Surface Pro 2 costs almost twice as much as the Venue 11 Pro. If you fancy the Venue 11 Pro it might be a good idea to invest in the keyboard dock, as the touchscreen simply is best used for typing a quick email and web browsing rather than working on involved MS Office documents. Even so, for sheer flexibility, the Venue 11 Pro provides a good alternative to the Microsoft Surface Pro 2.

The Dell Venue 11 Pro takes the Atom-powered small form factor tablet/hybrid idea and pushes the boundaries toward a more upscale, professional product. The screen of the Venue Pro 11 needs to be easier to turn up to proper levels, but the tablet performs well for its price and is an option for business users who want a convertible tablet with Window 8. Its battery life was also useful, making this low-power Intel Atom version a more affordable alternative to expensive Windows tablets such as the Microsoft Surface Pro 2.

Model:

The Dell Venue 11 Pro comes with a 10.8-inch screen which is a little bigger than other gadgets of its class but is surprisingly thin; only measuring 7 by 11 by 0.4 inches in dimensions. The tablet alone only weighs close to 0.8 kilograms and 1.5 kilograms with docking. Charging the tablet itself should not be an issue as it comes with a microUSB port made for this purpose.

The most attractive feature of this tablet is its amazing 1920 by 1080 resolution which definitely puts it at the top in terms of resolution. The display itself is bright and clear as it uses an IPS panel. The device also utilizes an Intel Atom Z3770 processor with Intel HD graphics. So, it offers the best display quality among Atom devices. It comes with 2GB memory that may seem a little low, but should be sufficient for normal business usage. The tablet comes with a 64GB solid-state drive (SSD) and if additional storage is needed, a microSD card can be used.

Last but not least, a battery life is also important. The Venue 11 Pro features a 32Wh battery which gives about 9 hours of battery life. This more than enough for a normal business day and the battery is swappable to boot. All in all, the Venue 11 Pro is the perfect replacement for a mobile tablet as well as a docking laptop and definitely a tablet made for business.

77.06%: This rating is not earth-shattering. This rating must actually be seen as average, since there are about as many devices with worse ratings as better ones. A purchase recommendation can only be seen with a lot of goodwill, unless it is about websites that generally rate strictly.
