Sad news for those wanting to rip and tear into the next entry in the storied DOOM franchise: DOOM Eternal has been delayed to March 20, 2020.
In a post on the official DOOM Twitter page, id Software said that the decision to delay DOOM Eternal was made to ensure the game meets id’s “standards of speed and polish.” Sad news, but if delaying the title by a few months means a better game, the wait is worth it.
The post also mentioned a few changes to DOOM Eternal. These include a planned free update, called “Invasion Mode,” that will allow players to “enter another player’s game as a playable demon.” Invasion Mode will be available as a separate download shortly after March 20 at no additional cost. Id Software will also throw in the DOOM 64 re-release as a pre-order bonus for DOOM Eternal on all platforms. The inclusion of DOOM 64 as a pre-order bonus is a nice apology for the delay, and the gesture has garnered quite a few positive comments on the Twitter thread. DOOM 64 will also launch as a standalone title for all platforms on March 20, 2020.
Lastly, DOOM Eternal is coming to the Nintendo Switch, but that version will launch after other platforms (read: after March 20, 2020). The port’s release date is still up in the air, but Switch gamers can expect to hear a finalized date” in the future.” (DOOM Eternal PS4 on sale now at Amazon)
