Casio debuts new G-Shock Frogman diver with 80-meter depth gauge and Tough Solar

Casio has officially lifted the curtains on its latest G-Shock Frogman “Master of G: Sea” watch. Dubbed the GWF-D1000BC-1JF, we first learned about the new watch in late August through a leak from Great G-Shock World. The new model finally brings a much-needed refresh for a flagship diving platform that has not seen a new colorway since 2019. It’s launching first in Japan later this month for ¥198,000.

The new Frogman doesn't reinvent the formula. Casio has kept the familiar, oversized styling of the GWF-D1000 and given it a more tactical makeover, with the new model featuring an all-black exterior with tan accents inspired by military gear. Casio has also applied DLC to the bezel and black IP treatment to the front screws, giving the chunky diver an appropriately tool-like finish.

The biggest update is the bracelet. Unlike the 2019 version, which features a carbon-fiber insert band, the new GWF-D1000BC gets a composite metal-and-resin band with H-shaped metal links and resin middle links. There’s also a two-stage extension mechanism for wearing it over a wetsuit, plus a slide-adjust system for fine-tuning the fit. At 181 grams, it’s hardly a featherweight, but Casio says the construction offers a nice balance of strength and lightness.

And this is still very much a Frogman. That means you're getting ISO-rated 200-meter water resistance and a sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating. Triple Sensor system is also onboard, but it's not the exact same ABC sensor setup found on the Pro Trek line. Here, you get direction and temperature sensing along with depth measurement, with the depth gauge capable of measuring down to 80 meters in 0.1-meter increments. You can also configure the watch to automatically start and stop dive measurements at 1.5 meters.

Casio has packed in plenty of extras as well, including Tough Solar charging, Multi-Band 6 radio-controlled timekeeping, a tide graph, moon data, world time, five alarms, a stopwatch, a timer, and a Super Illuminator LED backlight. The watch does miss out on Bluetooth connectivity, though.

The GWF-D1000BC-1JF is set to go on sale in Japan later this September. It’s priced at ¥198,000 (~$1,292) and currently listed as “coming soon” on the Casio website. As always, Casio has yet to confirm a global launch date.
