Borderlands 4 developer Gearbox Software has announced that the release date for the game has moved up to September 12. It was originally scheduled to release on September 23 but it looks like development has been progressing better than expected. This new release date may suggest that publisher 2K and its parent company Take-Two Interactive are making room for GTA 6 to avoid any clashes.
Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford posted a short video on X that has since been removed, where he revealed that Borderland 4 will be releasing earlier than previously scheduled, on September 12. The reason for this, as per Pitchford, is that everything is going great, in fact, “everything is kinda the best case scenario.” While that video has been deleted, a State of Play announcement scheduled for tomorrow, April 30, has confirmed the same over at PlayStation Blog.
This State of Play will be dedicated to Borderlands 4 and will show off over 20 minutes of developer-guided gameplay. The event starts at 2pm PT/10pm BST/11pm CEST.
While its great news for Borderlands fans, there could be another reason why the date was preponed – to avoid competition with GTA 6. Borderlands 4 is being published by 2K, which is owned by Take-Two Interactive. Take-Two also owns GTA 6 developer and publisher Rockstar. While GTA 6 does not have an exact release date, it is scheduled for fall 2025, which could mean late September. Moving up Borderlands 4 will avoid any clash with a likely bigger release such as GTA 6.
So, there is a chance that the highly anticipated sequel to the massively successful GTA 5 will release in late September or early October this year and there will not be any delays. Fingers crossed!
