GTA 6 isn’t even out yet – and it’s already hitting new milestones

According to Wikipedia, the first GTA 6 trailer isn't just the most-watched non-music video within 24 hours – it also held the title of the most-viewed trailer across all entertainment media for quite some time. Released on December 4, 2023, the clip has now hit two more major milestones: it’s been viewed over 250 million times on YouTube and has garnered more than 1 million comments.

Rockstar is taking a deliberately low-key approach to marketing – releasing almost no information, showing no gameplay and giving no interviews. Yet it’s this very lack of details that seems to be fueling the unprecedented hype surrounding the highly anticipated open-world game. According to Insider Gaming, this strategy is also paying off financially. Based on the typical YouTube revenue of about $3,000 per million views, Rockstar could have already made around $1 million from the trailer alone – at least on paper.

GTA 6 still doesn't have an official release date, but its first trailer has already secured a place in gaming history. When the second trailer will drop remains unclear, though a leaker claims it could arrive by the end of May. The next potential opportunity for news is Take-Two Interactive's earnings call, scheduled for May 15.

Community between hype and frustration

On Reddit, fans are celebrating the trailer with memes, praise and nostalgic nods to past GTA games – especially GTA V. Many comments take a humorous tone, with one joking: “If you play it backwards, it feels like a new trailer.” Despite the excitement, the community’s patience is wearing thin. It’s been over 500 days since the first trailer, and Rockstar has remained completely silent ever since.
