Low in contrast. Gaming-suitable laptops no longer have to be a costly affair these days. Asus also follows this trend with its X555LN. For 500 Euros (~$646), the buyer gets a 15.6-inch device with a Core i5 processor and GeForce 840M graphics core. The price is even below 500 Euros (~$646) without a Windows operating system.

Inexpensive all-rounder. A Core i3 processor and GeForce 820M graphics core make the Asus laptop a versatile all-rounder that offers enough power for everyday use and playing the odd game. Could buying a device for around 450 Euros (~$505) be a mistake?

In the end, the Asus X555LA's shortcomings are to be expected for a laptop with such a low price. If you have modest demands and want to spend around £300, it's a great Windows-powered choice. Toshiba's Chromebook 2 is a viable alternative, costing £50 less with a Full HD display, if you don't mind being restricted to Google's Chrome OS.

Asus has restricted build and component quality to fit the attractive £300 price point, but all the essentials work well together. The Haswell Intel chip means overall performance is better than any Celeron-based competition in the Asus X555LA-XX290H.

The Asus X555LA is a relatively powerful notebook for those on tight budgets. Its battery life is best in class, and the speakers get surprisingly loud. However, this system doesn't feel sturdy compared with other value-priced laptops, and its display is on the dim side. Overall, we prefer Dell Inspiron 15 5000 ($450), thanks to its similar power, soft-touch deck and more solid form, which comes in fetching colors like red.

We are, however, satisfied with the keyboard and touchpad experience as well as the battery life. It will serve well even to users searching for a more durable low-end laptop. But it will be extremely hard for the notebook to beat other similarly priced alternatives on the market such as the HP ProBook 450 G3, which holds the edge over the X555 in terms of build quality and performance, or some configurations from the Acer Aspire F5 and E15 lineup.

Slow and outdated. AMD's Carrizo platform has not aged well. Performance is slower than a U-class Intel processor while offering shorter battery life and an overall poorer experience.

Asus: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. is a major Taiwanese computer hardware manufacturer based in Taipei, founded in 1989. Under the Asus brand name, the company manufactures a wide range of products, including laptops, desktops, motherboards, graphics cards, monitors, smartphones and networking equipment, complete systems and PC components for end users.

Under the ROG (Republic of Gamers) brand name, ASUS manufactures gaming laptops known by gamers for their powerful specifications, dedicated graphics cards, high refresh rate displays and advanced cooling systems.

Beyond gaming, a wide range of notebooks are offered for different needs and budgets, from ultra-slim and lightweight ultrabooks to versatile 2-in-1 convertibles and budget-friendly options. In 2023, Asus had a 7% global market share of the PC market.

Customer satisfaction with ASUS notebooks concerns performance, the features, and the good price-performance ratio of ASUS notebooks. However, as with any brand, there are occasional reports of problems such as overheating, driver compatibility, or build quality issues.

Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.

NVIDIA GeForce 840M:

Mid-range graphics card from the GeForce 800M series based on the Maxwell architecture.

NVIDIA GeForce 820M:

Entry level 28nm Fermi GPU from the GeForce 800M series based on the GT 620M and 710M.

NVIDIA GeForce 940M: Mid-range graphics card of the GeForce 900M series, based on the Maxwell architecture.

AMD Radeon R7 (Bristol Ridge): Integrated graphics card in some Bristol Ridge APUs and based on the GCN architecture with 512 shader units and clock speeds of up to 900 MHz (9830P).

NVIDIA GeForce 920M: Renamed GeForce 825M Kepler based graphics card (GK208) with sligthly higher clock speed.

AMD Radeon R6 (Carrizo): Integrated graphics card in the Carrizo APUs from AMD. Based on the 3rd generation GCN architecture with 384 of the 512 shader cores. The performance depends on the configured TDP of the chip (ranging from 12 to 35 Watt).

Non demanding games should be playable with these graphics cards.

Intel HD Graphics 4400:

ULV integrated GPU (GT2) with 20 EUs found on certain Haswell CPU models.

AMD Radeon R5 M320: Entry level graphics card featuring 320 shaders (5 compute units) and clocked at 855 MHz.

Intel Core i5:

4210U: Haswell-based ULV dual-core processor clocked at 1.7 GHz with Turbo Boost support up to 2.7 GHz. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 4400 and a dual-channel DDR3 memory controller.

6200U: Skylake-based ULV dual-core processor for thin notebooks and ultrabooks. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 520 GPU and is manufactured in 14 nm.

Intel Core i3:

4030U: Haswell-based ULV dual-core processor clocked at 1.9 GHz without Turbo Boost support. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 4400 and a dual channel DDR3 memory controller.

4010U:

Haswell-based ULV dual-core processor clocked at 1.7 GHz with no Turbo Boost support. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 4400 and a dual-channel DDR3 memory controller.

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.

4510U: Haswell-based ULV dual-core processor clocked at 2.0 GHz with Turbo Boost support up to 3.1 GHz. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 4400 and a dual-channel DDR3 memory controller.

5500U: Broadwell-based ULV (ultra low voltage) dual-core processor for notebooks and ultrabooks. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 5500 GPU and is manufactured in 14 nm.

6500U: Skylake-based ULV dual-core processor for thin notebooks and ultrabooks. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 520 GPU and is manufactured in 14 nm.

AMD Carrizo:

FX-8800P: Top Carrizo APU of 2015 containing two "Excavator" CPU modules (with 4 integer and 2 FP cores counted as 4 compute cores). Performance can differ greatly depending on the configured TDP (ranging from 12 to 35 Watts).

A10-8700P: Mid-range Carrizo APU of 2015 containing two "Excavator" CPU modules (with 4 integer and 2 FP cores counted as 4 compute cores). Performance can differ greatly depending on the configured TDP (ranging from 12 to 35 Watts).

74.78%: This rating is poor. More than three quarters of the models are rated better. That is rather not a purchase recommendation. Even if verbal ratings in this area do not sound that bad ("sufficient" or "satisfactory"), they are usually euphemisms that disguise a classification as a below-average laptop.
