Reviews for the Asus Vivobook S 15 OLED Snapdragon
Qualcomm launches the new Snapdragon X Elite about nine months after the official announcement - with support from Microsoft and all the major laptop manufacturers. We were able to test the small X1E-78-100 as well as the X1E-80-100 and compare them with current chips from AMD, Apple and Intel. Update: Benchmarks of the Snapdragon X Plus (X1P-64-100)
The Vivobook S 15 OLED was previously only available with AMD and Intel processors but now, the new ARM chip—the Snapdragon X Elite—makes its debut inside this large multimedia laptop. The result is a surprisingly normal laptop with an impressive OLED panel which, unfortunately, doesn't run all applications and games.

So that was all for my review of the new Asus Vivobook S15 (S5507) with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Elite processor. It’s an entirely different breed of thin and light Windows laptops… a true competitor to Apple’s marvelous MacBook Air… that you and I have been waiting for all these years. And looking purely through the battery life and power efficiency lens, I must say this thing delivers on its promise almost flawlessly. I don’t think I mentioned this before but these Snapdragon machines don’t lose much of their performance when running in battery power either. Which has been one of my biggest icks with basically every Intel or AMD-powered laptop so far, to be honest. So… have Qualcomm and Microsoft finally, finally managed to offer a Windows experience that’s on par with Apple’s magnificent MacBook Air?

Windows on ARM is not new. Efforts began in 2012 with Windows RT, a version of Windows 8 for ARM. Over the years, significant developments were made, but none were of this scale where giants like Qualcomm, Microsoft, and other OEMs such as HP, Dell, ASUS, and more came together to create a comprehensive and competitive ARM-based Windows ecosystem. This collaboration aims to deliver high performance, energy efficiency, and seamless compatibility, striving to challenge the dominance of traditional x86 architecture and push the boundaries of what ARM processors can achieve in the Windows operating environment. The Asus Vivobook S 15 is a competent entry into the Copilot Plus PC arena, but one that struggles to stand out from the alternatives. It delivers good performance, long battery life, and a nice mix of wired and wireless connectivity—but the same is generally true of other Copilot Plus PCs. I’m also not a fan of Asus’ ho-hum design, which isn’t fitting for what should be a flagship laptop. The Vivobook S 15 is a good pick if you want a thin and light 15-inch machine, though, and defeats alternatives like the Acer Swift Edge 16 and LG Gram 16.

You might have expected Asus's first Copilot+ PC to emerge from its flagship thin-and-light Zenbook range. Instead, we have the Vivobook S15: a device from the brand's more affordable line, but still extremely slim, low in weight, and blessed with a stunning OLED screen. It turns out to be a worthy showcase of Qualcomm's new Snapdragon X hardware and Microsoft's new software, with virtues that may endear it not just to small business users, but even IT buyers from larger enterprises.

Focusing back on the ASUS Vivobook S15 (S5507), my first impression is based mostly from the fact that this is running Windows for Arm. Barring performance hits, it is a very functional piece of hardware at its current state but Qualcomm isn’t at fault here for not being able to bring out what the hardware can offer. As detailed earlier in this article, Microsoft’s focuses on technology first and decides later how to market that technology rather than focusing on actual user needs. This hurts its partner and hurts its users who can benefit greatly from a company that sees value in user experience. That said, as it is, the ASUS Vivobook S15 S5507 is a fully-functional daily driver if you focus mostly on cloud applications to light content creation.

The VivoBook S 15 2024 is the most premium model under the VivoBook line, and it. shows a lot of promise as a Copilot+ laptop that uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X series chips, ushering in a new era of Windows laptops. We still need to do further tests on the VivoBook S 15 2024–particularly with the performance of its Snapdragon X Elite processor and how good are all of its AI features–before we can give a proper verdict to one of the first Copilot+ laptops that’s arriving in the Philippines.

Qualcomm Adreno X1-85 3.8 TFLOPS: An integrated graphics adapter that four Qualcomm Snapdragon X processors feature, as of Sep 2024. It has 1,536 unified shaders at its disposal that are said to run at up to 1,250 MHz. The underlying architecture is reportedly in many respects the same as what was used in the Adreno 730. While thankfully faster than the aging Intel Iris Xe (96 EUs), the Adreno fails to match the Radeon 780M meaning Baldur's Gate 3, a triple-A title released in 2023, is barely playable at 1080p on low with 23 fps on average. Triple-A games of 2024 fare even worse, in no small part due to Qualcomm's subpar graphics drivers.
Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.

SD X Elite X1E-78-100: A pretty fast ARM architecture processor (SoC) for use in Windows laptops. The X1E-78-100 is the least powerful member of the Snapdragon X Elite processor series, as of May 2024; as such, it has 12 Oryon CPU cores running at no more than 3.4 GHz and the 3.8 TFLOPS Adreno X1-85 GPU. The 45 TOPS Hexagon NPU, an impressively fast LPDDR5x-8448 memory controller, USB 4.0 support, TB 4 support and PCIe 4 support are included as well.» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Processsors.

15-inch display variants are the standard and are used for more than half of all laptops.
The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, often allows high resolutions and thus offers rich details on the screen, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact - simply the standard compromise.
