With the ROG Phone 6 and ROG Phone 6 Pro, Asus updates its gaming smartphone to the newest technologies. While it brings a more comprehensive upgrade this year, there are also some reasons for complaint. We summarize the results of our tests for you.

From their exterior, the two Asus smartphones of the ROG Phone 6 series can hardly be distinguished. Only when you take a look at the back can you get definite clarity, since the more affordable model houses an RGB matrix, while the PRO model uses a PMOLED screen here. Otherwise, the equipment is almost identical. The 6.78-inch AMOLED display offers a Full HD+ resolution, a refresh rate of up to 165 Hz, and a touch sampling rate of 720 Hz. In our test, it impresses with extremely high brightness values and an accurate color reproduction, but the minimum brightness is fairly high. This is accompanied by the AirTrigger 6 ultrasound sensors, which allow you to expand the controls in very responsive ways when gaming.

The new camera setup uses a Sony IMX766 as the main sensor and is expanded by ultra-wide angle and macro lenses. The powerful, 6,000-mAh battery provides the ROG Phones with a long battery life even at high refresh rates, even though Asus did not use an LTPO panel.

The Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 is currently the potentially fastest SoC for Android smartphones, and Asus accomplishes the feat of keeping it relatively stable even under constant load, resulting in the ROG Phone 6 being even faster than an iPhone 13 Pro in terms of long term performance.

However, Asus also deserves some complaint about its model policy. The additional value of the Pro version remains within limits, particularly since the additional working memory brings no advantages in the test. What remains is a few additional mobile communication frequencies and a higher-quality PMOLED on the back. The following are the available equipment versions:

  • ROG Phone 6 with 12 GB RAM and 256 GB storage: 999 Euro (~$1003)
  • ROG Phone 6 with 16 GB RAM and 512 GB storage: 1,149 Euro (~$1153)
  • ROG Phone 6 Pro with 18 GB RAM and 512 GB storage: 1,299 Euro (~$1304)

In addition, Asus only promises two years of updates for Android. Considering the price point, this should have been twice as long.
