Sony has unveiled the DualSense Edge Controller, a new controller for the PlayStation 5. Featuring a more modular design than the regular DualSense, the DualSense Edge Controller appears to be Sony's answer to the Xbox Elite Series 2 Controller, which Microsoft already sells.

Sony has announced a new version of the DualSense, having already released the controller in numerous colourways. Although the latter are just different shells for the PlayStation 5's default controller, the DualSense Edge Controller should be considered more of a rival for the Xbox Elite Series 2 Controller. As such, the DualSense Edge Controller contains a few changes from the regular DualSense, albeit while maintaining the latter's design language.

Specifically, Sony has built the DualSense Edge Controller around customisation, with replaceable stick modules, multiple control profiles and the option of remapping button inputs. Also, Sony allows people to deactivate specific buttons, as well as adjusting dead zones, stick sensitivity and trigger travel distances. According to Sony, these features will allow people to customise the DualSense Edge Controller for faster inputs in FPS games or maximise throttle control in racing games.

Additionally, Sony has included an on-controller UI, which is accessible by a dedicated Fn button. Supposedly, the UI will allow people to swap between preset control profiles, adjust profile settings, test control iterations and adjust volume levels, all in-game. Moreover, the DualSense Edge Controller supports replaceable stick caps and back buttons, with Sony bundling standard, high dome, and low dome stick caps, plus half-dome and lever back buttons. By contrast, Sony will sell other stick modules separately.

Unfortunately, Sony has not confirmed how much the DualSense Edge Controller costs, nor from when it will be available. Currently, the company has only disclosed that the controller will launch 'in the months ahead'. Meanwhile, Daisuke Kurihara, Art Director, has shared insights on how Sony created the DualSense Edge Controller:

The opportunity to create the DualSense Edge wireless controller was a dream come true for our team. We wanted to build on the legacy of iconic PlayStation controllers by creating a controller that empowers players to experiment and personalize elements based on their own unique playstyle – whether they are a competitive gamer or someone who just enjoys having more options to customize their play. The DualSense Edge wireless controller also features a number of thoughtful design touches that we hope players will enjoy, including a distinct DualSense controller-inspired black-and-white color scheme and a unique PlayStation Shapes pattern on the touch pad and trigger surfaces.

We are thankful to the many gamers, professional esports players, and developers who helped provide feedback on the controller's design.
