Ubisoft seems to be making moves in the shadows, as a recent rumor suggests the developer is working on a souped-up remake of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag for current-generation hardware.
A video uploaded by TikTok user @therebelarchive showcased a fan convention in Rosemont, Illinois, where they met Matt Ryan, the beloved voice actor behind Black Flag’s protagonist, Edward Kenway. During the meet-and-greet, Ryan sent waves across the gaming community by seemingly confirming what many had suspected for a while: the possibility of an Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag remake.
Ryan broke the news in vague but cheeky terms. Matt teased the fan, “Have you beaten the game? Well, you might have to beat it again.” When asked by the fan, “Is it true?” Matt looked them in the eyes and smirked. “There’s a reason I say that, but I can’t say anything,” cryptically admitting to the possibility of a remake.
This isn’t the first time we’re hearing whispers of an Assassin’s Creed 4 remake. Nearly two years ago, reports suggested that Ubisoft Montreal, in collaboration with Ubisoft Singapore, was working on remaking the critically acclaimed 2013 title. Notably, Ubisoft Singapore was developing Skull and Bones at the time, which reportedly resulted in a net loss of $170 million for the publisher.
While Ubisoft has remained tight-lipped on the matter and declined to comment so far, the rumor mill continues to spin. Last month, videogame figurine manufacturer, PureArts, stated they were holding off on a new figurine for Edward Kenway for a very specific reason, stating, “Assassin's Creed fans out there, you should be aware something is going on with Edward.”
It was last year that Ubisoft’s CEO, Yves Guillemont, wrote in a blog post that the company is excited to work on remakes of older Assassin’s Creed games and modernize them.
Back in January, MP1ST reported that a Ubisoft Game Designer’s LinkedIn Profile listed “Assassin’s Creed Black Remake (2024) in their work experience. The LinkedIn Profile was subsequently removed, following the report.
The recent teaser from Matt Ryan has raised lots of questions and reignited hype for Ubisoft’s titular IP in the gaming community, as these hints come from someone heavily involved in the project.
While Ubisoft has officially confirmed nothing, all leads point to a return of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag.
