Apple releases new Mac Studio globally with 256 GB RAM, 16 TB storage and Apple M5 Ultra

Apple has finally released a new high-end desktop workstation globally. Replacing M3 Ultra and M4 Max variants, the Apple Mac Studio now includes the M5 Max and M5 Ultra, as well as up to 256 GB of RAM and 16 TB of storage. Apple has confirmed when 512 GB of RAM variants will be available, too.

Apple has finally updated its desktop workstation with new chipsets. Replacing older M3 Ultra and M4 Max variants (curr. $2,799 on Amazon), the new Mac Studio looks visually unchanged. However, Apple has swapped in the M5 Max and M5 Ultra, the latter of which it launched today alongside the M6.

The new Mac Studio starts at $2,499 with an M5 Max SoC featuring a 32-core GPU. That price only includes 36 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage, though. Alternatively, one can opt for 1 TB, 2 TB, 4 TB or 8 TB of storage priced for $300, $800, $1,800 and $3,800 extra, respectively.

Meanwhile, the 40-core GPU version of the M5 Max costs at least $3,099. While this $600 uplift also includes 48 GB of RAM, it sticks with 512 GB of storage. Moreover, only the 40-core GPU version of the M5 Max can be configured with anything higher than 36 GB of RAM. Currently, Apple offers this 40-core GPU version with 64 GB or 128 GB of RAM for $400 and $2,000 surcharges, respectively.

In comparison, M5 Ultra SKUs start at $5,499 with 96 GB of RAM and 1 TB of storage. Please note that this price includes a 30-core CPU and a 64-core GPU. At the time of publication, Apple charges at least $6,799 for its 36-core CPU and 80-core GPU variant, an SoC that combines two dual-die M5 Max SoCs to create Apple's first quad-die silicon.

Both M5 Ultra SoCs can be configured with 256 GB RAM too, albeit for $4,000 more than 96 GB RAM. Finally, the M5 Ultra can also be paired with 16 TB of storage, again a $4,000 surcharge over the next step down in Apple's configurator. As a result, the new Mac Studio can be configured up to $18,299 with a 36-core CPU, 80-core GPU, 256 GB of RAM and 16 TB of storage. Pre-orders should start shipping in late September; 512 GB RAM variants are due to arrive in 'late October'.
