Apple has unveiled a new Mac Studio for professionals. It can be configured with an Apple M4 Max chip with at least 512 GB storage/36 GB RAM or an Apple M3 Ultra with at least 1 TB storage/96 GB RAM. Prices start at $1,999.

Hot on the heels of Mark Gurman's prediction, Apple has unveiled its newest, and arguably most powerful small form factor desktop yet. A new Mac Studio is finally here, and this time, it comes with a mix of two generations of hardware. You can pick between the M4 Max and M3 Ultra, a chip long assumed to be dead.

The M3 Ultra is, like its predecessor, two M3 Max chips stacked side-by-side. It comes with a 28-core CPU (20 P-cores plus 8 E-cores), and a 60-core GPU. If you'd like, you can increase that to a 32-core CPU and an 80-core GPU. Both variants' memory bandwidth caps out at a whopping 892 GB/s. On the other hand, the M4 Max's specs are identical to that found on the MacBook Pro (up to 16-core CPU and 40-core GPU).

Next up, Apple claims the M3 Ultra is 2.6x faster than Mac Studio with M1 Ultra. Compared to the same chip, Its 32-core Neural Engine offers up to 16.9x faster token generation in LM Studio. I/O is aplenty on the new Mac Studio with four Thunderbolt 5.0 ports at the back, two USB 3.2 Type-C ports at the front (Thunderbolt 5.0 on M3 Ultra variant).

Other I/O includes two USB 3.0 Type-A, 10 Gb/s Ethernet, an HDMI 2.1 port and a 3.5 mm audio jack. The M4 Max powered Mac Studio comes with 512 GB storage and 36 GB unified memory in the base variant. On the other hand, the M3 Ultra version packs a 1 TB SSD and 96 GB of unified memory. The former maxes out at 128 GB RAM and 8 TB storage, while the latter bumps it up to 512 GB RAM and 16 TB storage.

Lastly, the M4 Max can output video to up to five displays and the M4 Ultra to eight displays. Unfortunately, Wi-Fi 7 isn't available on either model. You're still restricted to Wi-Fi 6e and Bluetooth 5.3. The M4 Max Mac Studio starts at $1,999 and the M3 Ultra version for $3,999. You can pre-order it now from Apple's website, with general availability to commence on March 12.
