Apple quietly brings the AirPods Pro back to US$249 with a minor revision that hints at an AirPods Pro 2 feature
Strictly speaking, Apple has released two new sets of AirPods this month. While it announced the third-generation AirPods during its Unleashed event, it did not discuss any next-generation AirPods Pro earbuds. Reputedly, a second-generation model will land in 2022, possibly with Apple's Find My integration too.
In the meantime, Apple has decided to sell the 'AirPods Pro with Magsafe Charging Case'. The minor revision is available for US$249 or £239 in the UK, making them slightly pricier than the previous AirPods Pro and the new AirPods. Apple no longer sells the old AirPods Pro on its website, but third-party retailers do. For example, Currys UK sells the older models for £219.
Hence, MagSafe charging is effectively a £20 surcharge with retailers. However, the revision allows Apple to maintain AirPods Pro pricing without looking like it is keeping older earbuds artificially high.
Thankfully, this does make the AirPods Pro compatible with Apple's charging accessories, such as the MagSafe Duo. In all likelihood, this mid-generation refresh for the AirPods Pro all but confirms MagSafe charging support for the second-generation AirPods Pro, too.
