Apple Intelligence may get a bit smarter, thanks to an unlikely source.
Based on some code spotted in iOS 18.4, a new rumor claims that Google's Gemini AI model may be available as a basis for Apple Intelligence in the near future. Posted on X by MacRumors analyst Aaron Perris (@aaronp613), a snippet of code shows that users will be able to choose either "Google" or "OpenAI" as options for third-party AI models.
The option for third-party AI models has been hinted at since Apple Intelligence's announcement last year. The current model of Apple Intelligence processes user queries through ChatGPT, which is owned by OpenAI.
Opening up Apple Intelligence to Google's Gemini model may bolster the feature, which has been met with mixed reviews so far. It's unclear at this time when the option to process requests through Gemini will officially launch, but the most likely candidate is the upcoming version of iOS, iOS 18.4. This version of Apple's mobile operating system is expected to bring several new AI features with it, including prioritized notifications and a new Image Playground mode.
In a world pushing for more AI integration in everything, AI-enhanced features have been a primary focus for smartphones. Google's Pixel line and many other Android smartphones now include a variety of AI features. Apple has taken its time rolling out Apple Intelligence, its flavor of AI, much to the chagrin of iPhone users. However, it seems that Apple will offload some of their work to third parties like Google's Gemini.
