On September 18, Apple released iOS 7 and completely redesigned the iPhone's operating system. Since then, the company has expanded and optimized the system over the years, but never dared to undertake another major redesign until now. According to the latest information from Bloomberg, Apple is planning to introduce a fundamentally revised design with new icons, menus, apps, window designs and buttons with iOS 19, iPadOS 19 and macOS 16.
The three major operating system updates are expected to be released in the second half of 2025 and are intended to simplify navigation and use of the operating systems. The design is also intended to be more consistent across all systems. The fresh design will reportedly be based on visionOS, Apple Vision Pro's operating system, meaning that Apple is likely to utilize much more depth, transparency and floating windows for menus.
Although iOS, iPadOS and macOS are said to look more alike than ever after the update, Apple is reportedly not intending to merge the operating systems since the company still wants to sell customers both a Mac and an iPad. In general, the fresh design is not only intended to boost sales but also to distract from the postponement of the new AI-based Siri version as well as the fact that Apple is years behind other companies in terms of AI features. Bloomberg also points out that such comprehensive changes may be difficult for many users to accept, so Apple will likely encounter some criticism.
