In recent years, OnePlus has moved ever closer to Oppo, its parent company. For example, the OnePlus Open (curr. $1,019.99 - renewed on Amazon) was a re-branded Oppo Find N3. The OnePlus 13 marked a reversal of fortunes though with a distinct design from the Find X8 Pro that Oppo also sells globally.
OnePlus has now confirmed that the OnePlus 13 and the OnePlus 13R will be the last of their kind. Specifically, future OnePlus flagships will miss out on the company's Alert Slider, which few Android OEMs have sought to emulate. In a statement on its community forums, OnePlus has confirmed that the Alert Slider will be replaced by a 'Customisable Button', which it describes in the following terms:
The new smart button is designed for that future, delivering a more personalised experience.
This change allows us to better utilise the device's space, explore new layouts, and make structural improvements while keeping performance top-notch.
We're not just replacing the Alert Slider, we're evolving it, keeping the best parts while unlocking new possibilities that weren't possible before.
OnePlus has been here before, having introduced the OnePlus 10T under three years ago without an Alert Slider. While Pete Lau admits that community pushback against this 'was about identity' of the OnePlus brand that made the company 'take a step back and rethink everything', it appears set on pushing ahead regardless this time. Unsurprisingly, fan reaction has not been positive so far.
