Most vertically foldable smartphones that are currently available are based on the form factor of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5, i.e., the main display is folded inwards to protect it from scratches during transportation, as the flexible plastic cover is not nearly as scratch-resistant as conventional smartphones. A second display on the outside, which is protected by Gorilla Glass Victus on many models, still allows the smartphone to be used without having to open it.
According to the latest information from Jeff Pu, however, Apple is bucking this trend, as the first iPhone with a foldable display will have an OLED panel with a diagonal of 7.9 inches that folds outwards, similar to the Huawei Mate Xs 2. Although this may potentially result in disadvantages in terms of scratch resistance, it has a number of advantages.
By dispensing with the additional display, smartphones can be made thinner and lighter, and the panel that wraps around the casing on one side looks stylish and the part that is folded back allows the main camera to be used for selfies without having to open the device first. With a diagonal of 7.9 inches, the "iPhone Fold" would only be slightly larger than the Huawei Mate Xs 2.
Jeff Pu assumes that the foldable iPhone will be launched on the market in 2026, around the same time as the iPhone 18. According to the current schedule, a MacBook with a foldable display with a diagonal of 20.3 inches is set to go into mass production at the end of 2025, although previous rumors have suggested that this device will not be launched until 2027.
