With prices of up to $2,599, the latest Apple iPad Pro is one of the most expensive tablets on the market. The repair experts at iFixit have now published their teardown video that shows how easy or difficult it is to replace the battery and repair the sleek tablet.

The new iPad Pro based on the Apple M5 already impressed us with its high performance and an excellent display in our comprehensive review, but Apple only includes a one-year warranty for free, so repairs after that must be paid for or done by the user.

As the new iFixit teardown shows, the tablet opens in the same way as the predecessor by separating the display from the frame. Because Apple uses adhesive to attach the screen, this process takes time and is fairly risky, as the display can break easily. After that, a total of ten adhesive strips have to be pulled out in order to replace the two battery cells.

The iPad Pro is relatively modular inside, as the USB-C port, cameras, ambient light sensor, LiDAR scanner and speakers can all be replaced individually. Apple uses two different types of screws, while the company’s self-service repair store provides repair manuals and the appropriate tools. It’s likely that replacement parts will soon be offered here as well.

Because opening the tablet is rather cumbersome and risky, the new iPad Pro M5 only receives 5 out of 10 possible points on iFixit’s repair scale. The battery replacement, which is one of the most common repairs after a few years of usage, is too difficult for many regular users.
