A future Apple Watch - possibly even a second-gen Watch Ultra - has been thought to launch as the first ever Apple mobile device with a microLED display. Furthermore, the alleged new screen could be hyped as the best one possible for it, having been made in-house by its own manufacturer, as with its proprietary S-series chipset.
This rumored in-house smartwatch display was once hailed as Apple's initial onslaught on the display market, to the potential dismay of companies such as Samsung and LG that would have gone from suppliers to competitors in one fell swoop.
However, it now seems Apple is not having as easy a time as it would like with these alleged plans. According to South Korea's Institute for Information & Communications Technology Promotion (or IITP), the Cupertino-based behemoth is finding the process of becoming a display-maker so challenging that it will rely on LG and Samsung for at least 60% of its screen-sourcing needs for the foreseeable future.
Furthermore, it seems Apple may be finding the evolution from miniLED and OLED more expensive than it anticipated, reportedly causing it to delay the release of its inaugural microLED device to 2025. Nevertheless, a Watch Ultra with such an upgrade is unlikely to be in any way cheap in any case: it is still US$799 in its current form through Best Buy today (April 27, 2023) after all.
