EMUI 6 is being tested on the Huawei Mate 9. The latest version of Huawei's skin is based on Android Oreo and brings a slew of improvements to the software arm of the device. The Mate 10 will launch on October 16 and is expected to run on EMUI 6.

OEMs like Samsung, Nokia, and OnePlus are already testing Oreo for their current flagships, so it comes as no surprise that Huawei has something similar in the works.  An exclusive piece on XDA has revealed details of the upcoming EMUI 6 that's currently being beta tested for the Mate 9.

Here are the changes the new software update will bring:

  • Screen Resolution: Allows you to switch your display resolution between HD and FHD. There was a Smart Resolution on EMUI 5.1—it's also here—but that one was a superficial change at best and doesn't actually affect the rendered resolution.
  • Navigation Bar Toggle: Allows you to hide the navigation bar until you swipe from the bottom up.
  • Bluetooth Audio Codec Switching: Allows you to change between various codecs like the aptX and aptX HD,
  • Substratum Support: Substratum looks to be a direct replacement for Cyanogen's renowned theme engine, and that's mostly because it isn't as restricted. EMUI 6 comes with Substratum support, which allows you to theme your UI and apps.

We expect all last-gen flagships to get the update when it's ready.
