Anbernic RG566 gaming handheld launching soon as specifications and photos leak online
Details about a new Anbernic gaming handheld have surfaced online. To recap, Anbernic released the RG35XX H earlier this month for $62.99 with the same underlying hardware as the RG35XX Plus, albeit arranged in a vertical layout. This time, it appears that the company will target a higher price point, at least based on leaked specifications.
As Retro Dodo reports, images of the 'Anbernic RG566' have been circulating on Chinese social media in transparent blue and white finishes. Additionally, the same device has appeared on Geekbench in half a dozen benchmark results. While neither provides a complete picture, combined, they provide various details of the hardware around which Anbernic has based the RG556.
On the one hand, Geekbench reports the RG566 as running the Unisoc T820, an octa-core chipset with a Mali-G57 MP4 GPU. In short, the Unisoc T820 should get close to the CPU performance of the MediaTek Dimensity 900 that powers the Retroid Pocket 4. However, the former's GPU trails the Mali-G68 MP4 in the Dimensity 900 by roughly 20% in our benchmarks.
Moreover, the RG556 will be available with 6 GB and 8 GB of RAM options; storage configurations remain unknown for now. On the other hand, leaked device images confirm the presence of a relatively large battery, as well as an active cooling solution to keep the Unisoc T820 chipset cool. On top of that, the RG556 is rumoured to feature a 1080p OLED display that measures 5.5-inches across, which would surpass the size and panel type in the Retroid Pocket 4.
Furthermore, the RG556 has a standard button layout with what could be a pair of lighting rings surrounding its analogue sticks. Currently, there have been no explicit mentions of a release date yet. However, the inclusion of retail packaging in one image implies that Anbernic is in the final stages of RG566 development.
