Amazon's Echo Frames haven't been as successful as Meta and Ray Ban's smart glasses, but a report says it has a new model in development with a feature not available on Meta's smart glasses.
According to Reuters, Amazon is working on a new pair of smart glasses codenamed Amelia
which will help it improve efficiency when it comes to the last stretch of a delivery such as within buildings. What this means is that the smart glasses will not be for consumers but for commercial use, specifically delivery drivers.
While the smart glasses are said to be based on the Echo Frames (available on Amazon for $299), it won't be an audio-only device. Reuters has revealed that anonymous sources informed them that the glasses will feature a small embedded display that will provide drivers with precise turn-by-turn directions.
The precise directions provided to the driver could help them save valuable seconds off each delivery
. These few seconds saved on each delivery adds up to a significant amount at the end of the day considering the several number of orders that are delivered daily.
Another advantage of the smart glasses is that since it is hands-free, it allows drivers to ditch their GPS devices and free their hands to carry more packages.
The anonymous sources also revealed that Amazon may kill the project or postpone it indefinitely if it doesn't get the desired results or due to financial reasons. They may also take a long while to reach perfection if development continues.
