Amazon announces all-new waterproof Kindle Paperwhite
The “all-new” Amazon Kindle Paperwhite has been announced, and it offers some good news for e-reader fans who like to indulge their love of reading in the bath or by the swimming pool. The latest addition to the Kindle family has IPX8-rated waterproof protection, which should keep the device safe for up to 60 minutes if dropped in fresh water that is no more than two meters deep.
Technicians at Amazon have been working on more than waterproofing, though. Compared to the third-generation Paperwhite, the new fourth-generation edition will be lighter and thinner. The predecessor weighed 205 g (for the Wi-Fi only variant), whereas the successor comes in at 182 g (Wi-Fi only model). In terms of size, the third-generation Paperwhite was 6.7 in x 4.6 in x 0.36 in (169 mm x 117 mm x 9.1 mm), and the all-new version is slightly smaller at 6.6 in x 4.6 in x 0.3 in (167 x 116 x 8.18 mm). The latest release comes with 8 GB storage, which can be increased to 32 GB.
The waterproof Amazon Kindle Paperwhite is available for pre-order and will start shipping on November 7. The basic model costs from US$129.99 (with ads; US$149.99 without), the 32 GB variant starts at US$159.99 (with ad support; US$179.99 without), and the top-of-the-range 32 GB edition with Wi-Fi and 4G LTE is priced at US$249.99 (no ads).
