Alleged M4-powered MacBook Pro unboxing video surfaces, showing same packaging seen in earlier leak
The M4-powered MacBook Pro is expected to be announced soon, and per recent reports, Apple could launch it in early November. While the company has shared no official details, the base variant of the laptop made its first alleged appearance with a retail box leak.
This questionable retail box of the supposed MacBook Pro with Apple M4 has suggested that the base variant will be getting a much-needed memory upgrade. However, the box was a bit weird because it showed the new laptop with the same wallpaper as last year's model.
Apple tends to refresh the packaging and show off its new laptop with a different wallpaper on the box, which made many question the authenticity of the retail box leak. Now, a Russian YouTuber who runs a channel named Wylsacom claims that they have managed to secure the base M4-powered Apple MacBook Pro before its official announcement.
In the unboxing video, the YouTuber shows the same retail box that leaked before. That is, it has the same wallpaper as the 2023 MacBook Pro (base variant curr. $1,487 on Amazon). Of course, this doesn't mean that the leaked packaging or this supposed unboxing of the unannounced laptop is legit. However, Mark Gurman, a reliable Bloomberg reporter, notes that the same wallpaper "may not mean much."
As pointed out by other X users replying to Gurman's tweet, Apple has used similar packaging for two of its past laptops before. More specifically, the retail box of the 15-inch M2 and M3 MacBook Air models was the same, although it didn't show the front of the laptops.
Beyond the packaging, the unboxing video by the Russian YouTuber suggests that the base M4-powered MacBook Pro will have the same chassis as last year, but with three Thunderbolt 4 ports. However, unlike what a possibly errored illustration in the official Store app showed before, the video doesn't appear to mention anything about Face ID support.
Moreover, the Russian YouTuber has shown off the Geekbench scores of the alleged MacBook Pro with Apple M4. They point to a noticeable improvement in single-core, multi-core, and OpenCL performance compared to the M3 model.
