Affordable mini PC with 8-core AMD APU and up to 64 GB DDR4 RAM goes on sale

Geekom has introduced a new variant of its A5 mini PC, dubbed the A5 2027 Edition.  This mini PC can be equipped with a pretty potent Ryzen 7 7730U APU and up to a whopping 64 GB DDR4 RAM and 7 TB of storage.

To be specific, the AMD Ryzen 7 7730U is an 8-core, 16-thread APU based on the Zen 3 architecture. Although the chip is well over 4 years old at this point, it still manages to keep up with modern CPUs such as the Ryzen AI 7 445 APU, which is only a few percentage points ahead in synthetic multi-core benchmarks.

The A5 mini PC can be equipped with up to 64 GB of RAM, courtesy of dual DDR4 SODIMM slots. Simply put, the Ryzen 7-powered A5 mini PC should be more than capable of handling day-to-day tasks and even some moderately intensive office workloads.

There is no room for discrete graphics, which is rather unsurprising. The mini PC therefore relies solely on the RX Vega 8 iGPU, which manages roughly 80% of a modern AMD Radeon 840M's performance. 

High-end gaming is undoubtedly out of the question, but some lightweight, low-end gaming and other lightweight workloads should be doable on the iGPU. 

The IO on offer has been listed below:

• Dual USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C ports
• Dual USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A ports, dual USB 2.0 Type-A ports
• Dual HDMI 2.0
• 2.5 G Ethernet
• SD card reader
• 3.5 mm audio jack 

Wireless networking is handled by Bluetooth 5.4 and Wi-Fi 6. Storage is handled by dual M.2 slots: An M.2 2280 slot with PCIe 3.0 x4 speeds, and a smaller M.2 2242 slot with SATA 3 speeds. 

A 2.5-inch drive bay is also present, which can accommodate up to a 2 TB hard drive or SSD. 

As for pricing, the Geekom A5 mini PC with the Ryzen 7 7730U APU, 16 GB of DDR4 RAM, and a 512 GB SSD is already available for purchase, priced at $549 on Amazon. For the time being, customers can save $55 by buying the mini PC directly from Geekom if they are comfortable doing so.
