Laptop buyers on the lookout for a capable no-frills laptop should be pleased to note that the Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 16 notebook is now available with a major 40% discount on Lenovo's official online store, bringing its price down to just $600 for a limited time.
This variant of the IdeaPad Slim 16 packs the capable AMD Ryzen AI 7 350 "Gorgon Point" APU paired with 16 GB of DDR5-5600 RAM. A 512 GB SSD is also onboard. Thankfully, both the RAM and storage are user-upgradeable, courtesy of dual SODIMM and dual M.2 slots.
Lenovo IdeaPad Slim: AMD Zen 5-powered 16-inch laptop for under $600
As indicated by our detailed review of the IdeaPad Slim 16 laptop, the overall build-quality of the system revealed no major compromises. The 16-inch laptop is around 18.4 mm or 0.72-inch thick, and weighs in at around 4.1 pounds or 1.8 kg. The 1920 x 1200 IPS display is surely far from the best, and only manages to cover around 57% of the sRGB color gamut.
The display's peak brightness of around 340 nits is also not adequate for outdoor usage on sunny days, but at least it does feature support for touch input.
Our test unit of the IdeaPad Slim laptop was equipped with a much slower Intel Core 5 210H CPU. The Ryzen AI 7 350 APU should be around 32% faster, trading blows with the Core Ultra 5 255H. In simpler terms, the vast majority of day-to-day workloads should be easily doable on the system. The Radeon 860M iGPU is no powerhouse, but should be capable of handling lightweight workloads and very casual gaming at modest settings.
A solid alternative to the MacBook Neo
In fact, compared to the similarly priced A18 Pro-powered Apple MacBook Neo, the Ryzen AI 7 is almost twice as fast in synthetic benchmarks. Moreover, the IdeaPad also packs twice the amount of RAM and storage as the Neo. That said, the Neo does have its strengths, such as a much superior display and arguably more premium build quality.
All told, the IdeaPad Slim 5 laptop, at its current discounted price, packs impressive value for folks who require a healthy amount of CPU performance, and don't really care about having a vivid display.
