Acer seem reluctant to bring in new names, as I have reviewed an Aspire 5 in the past, only the bit after the ‘5’ varies here however there is doubt that this a different unit as the previous one weighed over 2kilos and this one only clocks in a tad over 1.5 kilos so what else is new on this small and light laptop?

The Acer Aspire 5 (2020) is an inexpensive and capable laptop that will handle the PC basics with battery power to spare, but doesn’t dazzle elsewhere. If you need a straightforward daily driver, the Aspire 5 is a stable choice.

I'm hoping that discounts return for this laptop because if you can overlook the display — or have a monitor you can use with it most of the time — the Aspire 5 is a dependable super-sized laptop. However, given that the prices are now exceeding those of the new model and most competitors, this model of the Aspire 5 is ready to be put out to pasture. It'll get Windows 11 — and might receive a slight performance boost when it arrives — but unless it drops below $550 again, you can do better than this, even with the Aspire 5 series. Some of the more recent AMD models have touchscreens, but they're sub-FHD, so be prepared to see every pixel. I'm hoping to review the next generation shortly, but for now, either wait for a sale or skip this one entirely.

But if you can get all those benefits plus a six-core AMD processor for the same (or a comparable) price, I see no reason not to go that route instead if you’re wed to the 15-inch system. AMD systems are hard to find, but I recommend digging around or waiting until one becomes available. And if you’re willing to spend a bit more for the Ryzen-powered Swift 3, you’ll see a noticeable difference in build quality and portability as well as multiple extra hours of battery life. For students and on-the-go workers, I think that’s more than worth the cost.

The Acer Aspire 5 isn’t a game-changer. Its design is so subdued that it's barely noticeable and its Core i5 processor and integrated graphics won’t blow you away with their performance. But for a seriously affordable $549, the Aspire 5 serves up a solid audio system and has enough power to get the job done, whether the task is writing up a report, video chatting with family or watching a movie.

It's not the prettiest portable PC, the Acer Aspire 5, what with it's beefy screen bezels and dated chassis styling. But where it really counts, this laptop usually delivers. There's strong performance from the combination of Intel quad-core CPU, 8GB of RAM and M.2 SSD. The 14-inch IPS display is a cut above in most regards at this price point, too. Then there's the bona fide all-day battery life. For the money, that's one heck of an all-round combination. Even the chassis isn't so bad if durability rather than style are deemed the more critical metrics. For sure, we wish the Acer Aspire 5 were a little easier on the eye. But if you're looking for a laptop with a great feature set, strong performance, a good screen and proper all-day battery life, all four around £500, the Aspire 5 definitely delivers.

When shopping for a budget-friendly Windows 11 laptop, the goal is less to find a device that truly excels in any specific category—since that’s unlikely at a sub-$500 price point—but rather to choose a notebook that gets the job done without any glaring deficiencies. The Acer Aspire 5 mostly matches that description. It’s not the sleekest or most stylish laptop on the market, nor will the entry-level model’s Intel Core i3 processor blow anyone away with power. But after testing the A514-54-35LK model extensively, I found the Acer Aspire 5 to be a solid device at a compelling price—with just a couple of annoyances onboard. It's nearly one of the best laptops under $500 you can buy, but a few key weaknesses keep it from greatness.

The Aspire 5 series proves to be a competitive option in its budget-oriented segment, but it must be judged for what it is, as an affordable laptop built on Tiger Lake hardware, snappy with daily use and capable of occasional gaming, as long as you're going with one of the Iris Xe configurations. The hardware is paired with a fair chassis, IO, typing experience, screen-quality, and battery life for its price segment, but the laptop is definitely not without its quirks, as you'll find out from the detailed review down below.

The Acer Aspire 5 offers a well-rounded set of features, portability, and performance for a retail price of $400. Its midrange processor, multitude of ports, and comfortable keyboard and trackpad make it a practical choice among budget laptops if you need something that can handle a high school or college-level workload. For accomplishing office tasks quickly and easily, the Aspire 5 is a great choice but it’s not the only choice for $500 or less. The Dell Inspiron has slightly more storage and memory, and its tough body will be beneficial to those who handle their electronic devices rougher than others. Meanwhile, the HP Pavilion offers similar performance with a more stylish body and a great keyboard and trackpad to boot. If you are looking for a powerful PC on a budget, you will have to spend a little more. The HP Pavilion Gaming and the Acer Nitro 5 are both under $700, but they offer enough performance to play e-sports games at high frame rates or work in 3D modeling programs.

The Acer Aspire 5 avoids typical budget laptop pitfalls. Windows laptops sold at this price or below often make extreme cuts. They may have a dual-core processor, just 4GB of RAM, or a tiny 128GB hard drive. This laptop does none of this. It delivers the bare minimum for an enjoyable Windows 11 experience and does so at a price just tens of dollars more expensive than less capable alternatives (including other Aspire models). That makes it hard to beat for AU$1,212.

Acer: In 1976, the company was founded in Taiwan under the name Multitech and was renamed Acer or Acer Group in 1987. The product range includes, for example, laptops, tablets, smartphones, desktops, monitors, TVs and computer peripherals. Since 2007, the group has merged with Gateway Inc. and Packard Bell, which also market their own laptop product lines.
Acer computers are designed for a variety of purposes, including ultrabooks for mobile use, gaming laptops for gamers, affordable options for everyday tasks, and 2-in-1 convertible laptops for versatility. Acer's product portfolio also includes tablets that offer portable computing and multimedia capabilities.
Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.
NVIDIA GeForce MX250: Successor of the MX150 and still based on the same Pascal GP108 chip (similar to the desktop GT 1030) but with higher clock speeds. Available in two versions, a normal 25 Watt version and a low power version with 10 Watt TDP and reduced performance. The 25 Watt version e.g. offers a 21% higher boost clock than the old MX150 leading to a 5% performance gain.
Intel UHD Graphics 620: Integrated GPU (GT2, 24 EUs) found on some Kaby-Lake-Refresh CPU models (15 W ULV series). Technically identical to the previous Kaby-Lake GPU called HD Graphics 620.
Intel UHD Graphics G1 (Ice Lake 32 EU): Integrated graphics card in Intel Ice-Lake G1 SoCs based on the new Gen. 11 architecture with 32 of the 64 EUs (Execution Units / Shader Cluster). The clock rate depends on the processor model ranging from 300 MHz base to 1050 - 1100 MHz boost. The Ice-Lake chips are produced in the modern 10nm process at Intel produced.
Intel UHD Graphics Xe G4 48EUs: Integrated graphics card in Intel Tiger Lake G4 SoCs based on the new Gen. 12 architecture with 48 EUs (Execution Units / Shader Cluster). The clock rate depends on the processor model. The Tiger Lake chips are produced in the modern 10nm+ process at Intel.
Intel Iris Xe G7 80EUs: Integrated graphics card in Intel Tiger Lake G7 SoCs based on the new Gen. 12 architecture with 80 EUs (Execution Units / Shader Cluster). The clock rate depends on the processor model. The Tiger Lake chips are produced in the modern 10nm+ process at Intel.
NVIDIA GeForce MX350: Successor of the MX250 and most likely a renamed GeForce GTX 1050 based on the Pascal GP107 chip with 640 shaders and a 64 Bit memory bus for GDDR5.

The integrated memory controller supports LPDDR4-2933 and using cTDP up/down the performance can be adjusted by the OEM (10 - 25 Watt possible, 15W default). Compared to the faster i5-10510U, the level 3 cache was reduced from 8 to 6 MB.
i7-10510U: Comet Lake based low power quad-core processor (technically identical to Whiskey Lake and still produced on 14nm++). The CPU cores can clock between 1.8 and 4.9 GHz (all 4 cores 4.3 GHz max.) with HyperThreading (8 threads). The integrated memory controller supports DDR4-2666 and using cTDP up/down the performance can be adjusted by the OEM (10 - 25 Watt possible, 15W default).
Intel Ice Lake:
i3-1005G1: A low-power, Ice Lake family processor (SoC) featuring 2 cores, 4 threads, 4 MB of L3 cache and the UHD G1 (32 EUs) iGPU. This Core i3 saw the light of day in 2019; it is designed for use in highly portable consumer laptops of the more affordable flavour. The CPU cores run at 1.2 GHz to 3.4 GHz which is not a lot. 14.00:
14 inch display size represents a middle ground between the small subnotebook formats and the screens of the standard 15 inch laptops.
The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, provides good resolutions with usable detail sizes, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact.
In the past, 14-inch devices were very rare, but now they are the standard for laptops after the 15-inchers.

75.26%: This rating is not earth-shattering. This rating must actually be seen as average, since there are about as many devices with worse ratings as better ones. A purchase recommendation can only be seen with a lot of goodwill, unless it is about websites that generally rate strictly.
