The AYA NEO team will not be releasing the AYA NEO NEXT series exclusively with last-generation AMD Ryzen APUs. Instead, the company has confirmed that some models will ship with the Ryzen 7 5825U, a Barcelo APU with broadly the same specifications as the Ryzen 7 5800U. However, AYA NEO handhelds with Ryzen 6000 APUs and RDNA 2-based iGPUs will not launch until the end of 2022 at the earliest.

Last week, the AYA NEO team announced its next handheld, the AYA NEO NEXT. To arrive as four models, the AYA NEO NEXT arrived hot on the heels of AMD's Ryzen 6000 series reveal at CES 2022. While AMD demonstrated next-generation iGPUs in APUs like the Ryzen 7 6800U, the AYA NEO team elected to launch the NEXT with last-generation hardware.

Specifically, the company unveiled the NEXT with a Ryzen 7 5800U, which offers minimal performance improvements compared to the Ryzen 7 4800U available in current AYA NEO models. According to our database, the Ryzen 7 5800U is roughly 8% faster than its predecessor, a rather unimpressive figure considering its newer Zen 3 cores, increased TDP, higher clock speeds, and double the L3 cache.

Now, the AYA NEO team has clarified that it will actually ship the AYA NEO NEXT with the Ryzen 7 5825U, not the Ryzen 7 5800U. AMD refers to the Ryzen 7 5825U as a Barcelo APU, but it is a Cezanne chip in all but name. During its AMD presentation, AMD confirmed that the Ryzen 7 5825U has a 100 MHz higher boost clock than the Ryzen 7 5800U and a 200 MHz lower iGPU clock speed.

For some reason, the AYA NEO team will only ship the AYA NEO NEXT and AYA NEO NEXT Pro with a Ryzen 7 5825U. By contrast, the AYA NEO NEXT Advance remains on the Ryzen 7 5800U. The same blog post explains the situation about sourcing Ryzen 6000 APUs too, such as the Ryzen 7 6800U:

The AYA team also said that they will do their best to let fans experience the charm of the 6000 series as early as possible, but this is likely to happen at the end of this year. At this stage, as a small factory, I want to get the 6000 series The difficulty is too high.

In short, AYA NEO is the first company to announce a device running Barcelo hardware. Unfortunately, it will be unable to deliver RDNA 2 iGPUs in its handheld until the end of 2022 at the earliest.
