AMD launches its Ryzen PRO 5000 Mobile series, promising Cezanne-level upgrades for next-gen business laptops

Today (March 16, 2021), AMD has introduced the latest, Zen 3-based versions of the Ryzen PRO mobile series. The OEM asserts that these chipsets are what you want in your next business fleet or work-from-home set-up. The line-up involves improvements such as the new unified L3 cache, which is a monolithic 16MB affair rather than the dual 4+4MB development of yesteryear.

AMD also claims that the improved Cezanne cores have imbued the new Ryzen PROs with up to 19% improvements in IPC over Zen 2. These potential upgrades apply to the Ryzen 7 PRO 5850U, 5 PRO 5650U and 3 PRO 5450U platforms. Their core/thread configurations have now been confirmed as 8/16, 6/12 and 4/8 respectively.

Their speeds range from 1.9 to 4.6GHz, 2.3 to 4.2GHz and 2.6 to 4.0GHz, which might imply seriously task-specific flexibility, particularly in the 7 PRO 5850U. The new chipsets are also of course all 7nm and have a TDP of 15W.

AMD claims that the new 7 PRO flagship has beaten the Core i7-1185G7 in PassMark 10 CPU and Cinebench R20 multi-core scores by 65% (although it lost out to its Intel rival in single-core scores by 3%). In addition, the OEM claims the 5850U wins in various composite scores from various relevant benchmark clusters (PassMark 10 tests added to those of PCMark 10, for example) across the board. 

In terms of things business customers might care about more, the 5850U was also found to be "10% faster" than the i7 when running Word apps and a 49-person Zoom call at the same time. The 7 PRO could also open apps 19% faster than the i7-1185G7, while also performing at least as well in running MS Office programs.

Therefore, it may be no surprise that some big names in the productivity space have picked this new Ryzen PRO series up for its next-gen business thin-and-lights. HP is to incorporate it into its upcoming EliteBook 845 G8, as well as the Probooks Aero 635 G2 and X360 435 G8 - which will come as AMD-only machines, moreover.

Meanwhile, the Lenovo ThinkBooks 14S and 16P will come with Ryzen PRO 5000 platforms, not to mention the ThinkPad T14s. AMD did not mention when all of these new professionally-geared PCs will be available, however.
